Re: things you are surprised do have a large fandom?

I feel like when a piece of media gets a LOT of people shipping a particular pairing very hard in its early days, it basically becomes an unstoppable juggernaut, and takes numerous years and numerous instances of shitting the bed for it to actually burn out.

Johnlock was my main OTP from early 2012 to 2019, and that was despite the fact that I thought everything after S2 was atrocious. 3x01 came out in January of 2014, and I continued shipping Johnlock until like March of 2019, so like five years. Because I still loved Johnlock the way people in fandom were writing it. I still loved it the way it existed in my head. And there was still an absolute flood of fanfic and fanart being created for it, to keep me engaged.

Would it have been nice if I still liked canon? Yeah, definitely. It was unquestionably a bummer being totally estranged from canon from 3x01 onward. But it's not like I'd ever expected Johnlock to be canon in the first place, and Johnlock was what I was fannish about, so it wasn't really that hard to just shrug off canon and go, "Oh well, this is why we make our own fun."
