As a kid, I had a rich friend with several American Girl dolls and all the extras. I never wanted the dolls, but I did covet the hell out of those accessories: the historical kitchen tools, the miniature food, the old-fashioned desks. Sometimes I thought about just stealing one or two little things. I thought she’d never notice – she had so much. But I never would.

Had a friend with every AG doll as they came out, with all of their secondary and tertiary outfits and accoutrement. She never wanted to DO anything with them, though, other than keep them set up in little pseudo-dioramas and brag about how her folks bought her the latest. She even managed to score us (I did go with her!) tickets to the Josephina release party.

But all I really remember of the AG "experience" was how self-centered 90% of the other girls I met at the release party were. They all either had money, or had family members who had the money to spoil them, and it SHOWED.

And what really stuck with me: None of them ever actually wanted to play with their dolls. They were just... prizes. Never wanted an AG doll after because to me, they just seemed like part of an elite snob-show. Did enjoy the stories, though.

AG is after my time but I have never liked dolls of any kind. But I adore the hell out of dollhouses and all the furnishings. I started making rooms out of cardboard boxes earlier this year and it’s a struggle not to buy every dollhouse accessory I see!

I got into making cardboard houses this year, too. My problem is that I enjoy the architectural construction of the spaces but not so much making the furnishings, which is fussier work, and I can't spend money on them. So I've ended up with a lot of "move-in ready" spaces that I just keep stacking on top of each other LOL.

My sister had a so called friend who stole from her. Welcome trust issues for her.

None of my friends had AG dolls, but I loved getting the catalogs and looking at all the cute little accessories. Now I have an AG collection and my favorite items are definitely the food and school sets. All those teensy little crayons and cookies. So sweet.

Oh my gosh same. I read through those catalogs like I was looking at a museum.

*nod* The houses and accessories are the best part of dolls. Making a mini world. I was never into American Girl, but I'll never forget the hours I spent playing with the Barbie pool and camper. The dolls usually ended up in the back of my closet.

I used to make lists and charts of the food, both from the catalog and from the books. Unfortunately I no longer have them.
