I can't bring myself to care about shifters. 7 foot blue/grey/green ect alien who speaks English? Sure I'll buy that. Can't do a wolf/dragon shifter.

There's like a mental block that says that's not real. It's weird but I can't turn my brain off enough to enjoy it. Id even be able to stomach it being like a glamour spell or something but a man who transmogrifies into a thing that isn't a person and is bigger or smaller I just can't! lol

I DNF'd a book because a shifter showed up in chapter 2.

Indie writer here, and I write wolf shifters (werewolves).
In my stories I remember the law of conservation of matter, so the creatures are the same weight in both forms. I don't think that will change your opinion, OP, but not all shifters are the same.
