Re: Weekend Plans
Do you have a deep freezer? And what do you use to store them in? Bags or like those soup cube things? I've always wanted to meal prep more but don't have the space! I've also wanted to read DCC. Waiting for it to show up in some used bookstores. xD
Re: Weekend Plans
(Anonymous) 2025-10-24 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)I do not have a deep freezer, I only have uprights. So I have to get creative about stacking my trays of food in them before freeze drying. Once freeze dried, I store them in thick Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. They have a shelf life of 25 years. Some things may last longer and some may not last as long but everything I’ve made should be good for at least ten years. I make it for backpacking for me and my dog. My goal is to build up enough inventory and variety to supply a good chunk of my PCT attempt in the distant future. I have a specialty diet that is very difficult to deal with under optimal conditions and if I were to have done the thru hike this year I would have had something like a 700 mile stretch and a 350 mile stretch where I wouldn’t have been able to buy enough safe calories for myself at the resupply shops along trail. I’d have to take extra time and pay more money to go far from trail to grocery shop and then get back to trail. A resupply could take me more days than the amount of food I’d buy (meaning 3-4 days to resupply but only able to find 2-3 days of calories).
I realize I have gone way more in depth than necessary but I know we have other hikers here so I’ll leave it in case they find it interesting. Hiking nutrition is a whole thing in itself and it’s extra tricky for someone like me with a hyper specific diet. So my trek will rely mainly on boxes sent to post offices and businesses along the route and the goal is that the majority of the food in them is homemade.
