I genuinely don't know how anyone can read the New Jedi Order and think it was more faithful to the original trilogy than the sequels. Fans have rose colored glasses when it comes to the EU. There were great parts, but also really terrible parts. Just like the sequels.

Deep Space 9 is so good at deconstructing Star Trek, that it, with the episode Valiant, successfully deconstructed the entire premise of the JJ reboot a whole decade before that movie was even made. Mind you, Futurama managed to deconstruct a key point from Into Darkness with its ep Deep South too... so maybe The JJ-Trek just wasn't built very well to start with.

Twenty years ago, I was active in a fandom with a smallish but devoted following. Not one of the mega-fandoms, but it's still around. I was not a BNF, but I wrote a fic that was fairly popular at the time and was well known and recced for years after, even when I'd drifted away from the fandom.

I happened to Google it today to check when I'd written it and the first result was one of those rant communities on LJ complaining about aspects of my fanfic that made it a DNF for the person who posted it. They're not entirely wrong. It was the first long fic I'd ever written, and there are indeed pacing issues and narrative threads I could not entirely pull off.

Remember, I was a n00b.

But they also accused me [of?] not warning properly for kinks that are, IMO, not present, and consent issues in a sex scene.

It wasn't a non-con, or anything graphic even. It was a combination of sex/magical spell that could not be reversed or halted once it began (because of the magic), and to the person ranting, that sounded like non-con. Keep in mind that nobody blinked an eye back in the day, because those were different times. I probably shouldn't be so upset by this, but I am. I agree it reads differently now, and of course the fic had issues. But not "save yourself and don't read this fic" issues, ffs.

Maybe it's hindsight bias, but I feel like I knew that Life of a Showgirl wasn't going to be very good. Like, from the second she announced it.

1. She's happy. She never writes her best when she's happy.
2. It's her 12th album. Yes every album has crazy high expectations on it, but TS13 is going to have them even more. By a lot. If I were Taylor, I would be hoarding any song that even seemed *slightly* genius for that album.

The upshot of this is that Showgirl turned out to be way better than I expected, and it's a nice surprise! At the first listen it was just...fine, but at this point I genuinely like it.

(I mean, I wish someone had slapped some sense into her about Wood, but one cringey song is not the end of the world or her career.)

I liked Lord Boreal better in the books.

S!B he's obviously attracted to Lyra, but it added so much to his creep factor and the feeling of her being in peril.

Ariyon Bakare is very good. But his Boreal is just a different character.

In The Sims 2, part of the lore of the premade characters is that one of the Sims dislikes aliens. People always act like this particular Sim is an evil, hateful monster. HOWEVER, also in The Sims 2, Sims can be abducted by aliens, and male Sims will return pregnant. That means that aliens are actually abducting Sims often against their will, and forcibly impregnating them without their consent. That is NOT the same thing as a person being prejudiced due to ethnicity or nationality, and if you look at it from an in-universe perspective, it's not at all irrational for this Sim to dislike aliens. But the Sims community as a whole just ignores this and continues to treat the Sim like he's a real-life racist person.

28 Years Later had a character whose gang looks are based on notorious monster Jimmy Savile, and this character is going to get an even bigger role in the sequel.

I know that the rage-infected UK is culturally stuck in time before the virus, when Savile's crimes weren't revealed, but real world filmmakers should know better. It's not like there weren't any other popular culture icons to model the gang after.
