Agreed, the actor was too smooth and clearly focused on Mrs. Coulter with no real interest in Lyra. Which is fine in adaptation and maybe for the better in terms of the production.

That being said, Boreal in the books was deeply creepy and it did work to make him a more menacing villain there. I appreciate that Pullman can write both conflicted villains and straight-up sickos.
