A band I really like announced a new album after a decent hiatus, and when they put out the tour schedule, I couldn't believe it. They're playing a venue in my neighborhood. I can walk to it, and it's THE NIGHT BEFORE MY BIRTHDAY. Perfect, right? I bought a ticket (at a great price) immediately. So what if no one I know wants to come with me? I don't love that it's SRO, but I'm a grown woman, I can probably find a decent place in the crowd without getting squished. The time and place of it seems fated!

Well, the album came out. And it is APPALLINGLY mid. Every song sounds alike and I think they spent their entire hiatus getting up their own assholes narratively. I don't want an entire evening of THAT. It all feels like a cosmic joke. At least it's not a milestone birthday.

I mean, most bands don't play ONLY their new stuff, you most likely would get to hear some old favorites...

Had this with a recent concert I travelled _FAR_ too far away for. Love the band. Loved their first two albums. And thank GOD, they played from ALL of their albums and even dusted off a particularly older song for the tour. You might not be AS disappointed as yu suspect, ST!

I agree, even if they play a couple of new tracks they know people are there for the classics!

I would think this was about Sabaton if not for the mention of the hiatus. There new album is really, really meh and not up to their usual awesomeness.

What's their best in your opinion? I've listened to them a bit when they come up on power metal playlists but never gotten more into them.

So, I adored their two most recent before this one, the two on World War I. And I really like Carolus Rex and Heroes. Honestly hard for me to pick a single one because I've loved all their albums except this recent one and their first one.

As others have said OP: bands won't just play their new stuff, they'll play a mix because they know that's what's the audience will want. So yeah you'll probably hear a few tracks you don't care for, but you're still going to hear the ones you like.

So don't fret. :)

(Or if we're wrong come back and yell at us :P)

I’d be willing to bet a lot of money they know the album is mid and play as few songs from it as contractually possible. And any band that tours is going to play their biggest hits and fan faves. I’m actually jealous because despite your misgivings, I think you’re going to have an awesome birthday eve concert!

Yeah, usually bands mix old hits into the play list. Also. Some albums are just better live, this can be the case

+1. I had this happen with a band I liked and the songs that were very bland on the album were actually terrific live. I don't know what happened in the studio to drain all the energy out of them!

I’m really curious to know what band it is. I’m sorry the new album is mid, but I hope you still have a great time, OP! And I hope they play all your favorite songs too!

Oof I feel you, OP. I kind of have to laugh because I've been there and am also there. My favorite band of all time put out a new song last week, I finally got to hear it a couple days ago and it is so aggressively mediocre I'm sad. They also posted up a t-shirt with the song title on it. The shirt is awesome, I need a new one since the one the lead guy gave me in 1996 is too ratty to wear. But. The song. It's not good. SIGH.

So I have a band that has been on hiatus forever and just announced an album "releasing soon" but no dates or anything and I live in fear* of it being mid or disappointing, because the rest of the albums have been pure joy of which I rarely find in music. All this to say I definitely understand where you're at. I'd be so sad if I finally got a a chance to see this band that has brought me such joy and excitement and then it was a mid experience. And it's like an extra tease with them being right "nextdoor"

I do think the other anons are right that they'll most likely play a mix, but I understand the disappointment.

I'd love it if you posted in the general comments after you go about how it went!
