You'll get death threats eventually. Polite arguing is not possible online. People will call each other slurs, mock grammar, etc. OP won't be able to talk civilly too. If they ere able to stay polite and pleasant they wouldn't need anything but the general fandom places for that.

This. Ship wars just get nasty. And honestly, there is a difference between a friendly debate and an actual war. I'd love to go somewhere and just talk and debate about fandom things, even shipping. But when it becomes a war it stops being fun.

I've watched the death threats fly first hand in a couple of fandoms. Kinda makes me glad I don't really participate like I used to, no matter how much I like the fandoms.

I think the problem is that a lot of people SAY they want a friendly debate, but 100% of people want to be right--and only about 20% of them are willing to remain open to conflicting ideas throughout the entire discussion.

That said; I used to love debating fandom topics with friends. These days? Mmm... no thanks. My unpopular opinions can stay right in my head where they started.

I genuinely don't care if I get death threats online. My fandom accounts are not attached to anything in real life. Death threats just mean I'm really getting under someone's skin.

It also means that this someone is not worthy to talk to imo.

I'm the secret OP, and yeah, same. I guess that's a big part of why I still think it would be fun. People being nasty to me online about something so fundamentally trivial just doesn't bother me.

Hell, I've had antis call me some pretty heinous things in spaces where I wasn't expecting hostility, and it still didn't really bother me much. I basically just felt like rolling my eyes and patting them condescendingly on the head.

If there were a space dedicated to ship wars, I don't think I would specifically go looking to get into arguments that turned nasty on that level, but if the person I was arguing with completely lost all civility I would probably just call it quits and go find someone else who wasn't currently spewing baseless vitriol.

If they ere able to stay polite and pleasant they wouldn't need anything but the general fandom places for that.

OP - There are a few miles of territory between "sends death threats" and "totally polite and pleasant." Nobody I've known in fandom for the last fifteen years plus would define "pleasant" as "arguing one's face off about how their ship is the bestest ship and all the other ships are boring and give them the ick." That is not the fandom standard for pleasant, generally. People don't typically appreciate when you do stuff like that - even if you tag it appropriately. If you do stuff like that on main, you tend to end up with mutuals who are mainly antis and hostile, contrarian dicks, because nobody else wants that stuff on their dash or in their feed.

Which is totally fine and fair and I get it. TBH, I don't really want a bunch of that stuff on my dash, either.

But that's exactly why I would enjoy having a designated space where people could go to be quarrelsome, and critical, and opinionated, and unapologetically biased about their ship being the best ship for reals. So that there could be an outlet for that kind of thing, without people having to see it on their dash or whatever. *shrug*
