I used to have a lot of fun during "Kinktober" events, now I dread them.

The writing in my current fandom is so bad and the ao3 page is basically just flooded with poorly written and OOC Kinktober entries during the entire month.

I'd just move on to a different fandom but I don't have one at the moment.

I remember when we used to shame bad kink fics, and so writers made sure they wrote well or kept it to themselves. Apparently this is not "nice" any more. Enshittification has this ensued.

Yeah, I kind of dread them too. The quality in my fandom is not so low, and the balance during October isn't SO bad that I can't still find non-Kinktober-style fics that look interesting, so I don't mind them *that* much. But I think it's an indication of how fandom has switched from a reader culture to a writer culture, where everyone wants to write the 31 fics for Kinktober or the novel for November, but no one really wants to read or give feedback on other people's work, so it's a bunch of writers in a room churning out hastily-written fics while ignoring everyone else's writing in the fandom. A bit of a strange/lonely fandom community.

I'm beginning to dread all these challenges. I'm subscribed to a lot of writers and my inbox of updates if flooded from October through January with fics too short to read, or in fandoms I have zero interest in exploring. Not sure what the writing quality is like, if the story isn't over 1k I'm generally not going to read it. I can only imagine how much worse it browsing for new stories on Ao3 and having the fandom flooded with these challenge fics.

I am having the same experience in my fandom on ao3. It's awful. And the kinks are all the same (I'm assuming there's a challenge list somewhere? But I haven't seen one linked) and they are all the absolute mildest form of a kink that could barely fit the label. At this point I'd take out of character fics if the kink was good but no, it's all trash.

Bless these people for writing and having fun, but I wish they'd tag them or put them all in one chaptered fic or something so I could easily avoid them.

I recently tried to talk someone out of tagging their fic with "Older Man/Younger Woman" cause the dude was 24. If I click on a fic tagged Older Man and the dude ain't at least 50, I will fill the author's shoes with cottage cheese.

Yes, the way I imagine characters appearances often does shift a bit based on my preferred top/bottom and D/s roles. I'm not nearly as extreme about it as some people are — I'll imagine a character about 2" taller/shorter, and one or two dress sizes thicker/thinner at most — but I do still like depictions that lean into certain dynamics, even if they're stereotypes.

I get why it rubs some people the wrong way, but it's what I like.

I can handle an inch or two, I can handle a slightly different size, but taking a 6’2”, 240# guy (1.87 m, 109 kg) and making him 5’7”, 160# (1.7 m, 72.6 kg) is ridiculous. Sorry, OP. I just can’t.

I just don't get Calamity Jane. Why make her so... dull and clumsy and silly and angry? Every other damn character has a clever spark of some kind, even the ones too quick to anger or the spineless obedient toadies. She should be an easy character for me to like and yet I can't stand her.

I'm really positively surprised at how much the Nod Krai update helped my Genshin Impact burnout. The character designs - while not perfect - are so much better than the last year's and the whole new area feels just so much more like Genshin again.
I hated all of Natlan so much and was really close to dumping the game (and would have if it hadn't been for the sunk cost fallacy) but it feels like I'm healing lol
