I never was quite sure what Mickey did to deserve the disrespect he got from the Doctor and especially Rose. I mean, in the first episode he freaked out when confronted with the existence of aliens, but other than that, he doesn't really seem to do much to support the other characters' apparent belief that he's an idiot. So you have dialogue like "You're not keeping the horse!" "I let you keep Mickey!" and you're not sure where they're getting this from.

I think the doctor's disrespect is harder to understand than Rose's (though I suppose it's jealousy, which would make it easier to understand?) I get the impression Rose has known him since their childhood, and she's probably used at being better than him at things, so she doesn't notice his strengths or see his growth. Not that that excuses her exactly, but it seems very realistic. It's a normal relationship dynamic between siblings or a certain type of childhood friends. Although that makes me wonder why they dated in the first place. D:

I'm the opposite - I always had a harder time comprehending Rose's disrespect. The Doctor I could understand - when he first met Mickey he pretty much hated everyone and everything (the phrase 'stupid apes' was liberally applied by the 9th Doctor to just about everyone, Rose included) and later, as he grew fonder of Rose, he came to see Mickey as a rival (not unreasonable, as Mickey had been Rose's boyfriend prior to her running off with the Doctor.)

But Rose was his friend from childhood, had been his girlfriend, and still she trod all over him. I didn't like that. I liked HER, but I didn't like that at all.

I mean, when Rose came back after her first trip with the Doctor and found out she'd accidentally been away for a YEAR instead of an all-night, she was told that her mother had blamed Mickey for her disappearance, but all that seemed to matter was the Doctor and his poor poor cheek where Rose's mum had slapped him. Christ.

Even the Doctor himself ranted to the Cyberleader that it was the people like Mickey that made up the essence of humanity.
