Unless he has other symptoms of worm infection, it's probably going to be age or an age related illness. My 16 yr old cat lost half his weight in a week and it turned out to be cancer. My 18 year old cat has lost almost half his weight over the course of this year, but tests don't show anything wrong, he's just old.

This. Worms aren't that likely. It is likely age, maybe combined with stress.

OP

he doesn't have any other symptoms and I clean his litter tray so I've looked at his poop. I'm willing to put it down to age and mourning stress.
