Outside Your Norm

Semi-inspired by secret 6, but only slightly. What things do you like that are very different from your normal type? Could be show/book/movie/game, could be ship, could be character, could be trope. Whatever. Just something you like that would surprise anyone who knew your usual tastes.

As a general rule I hate 'reality' tv or anything like it, but I fell hard for a few seasons of Below Deck. There is just something about watching people who are actually working hard and the drama mostly being about rich idiots instead of glorifying the rich. I haven't watched it in years though. I've heard it's gone way more dramatic with the crew and lost some of the air of genuine.

Personally, as the Infamous Cute Things Lover Girl … some people would not guess the true crime rpf. But it’s a common pipeline so I hear

Generally don't like "chick flicks" but I have two I love. Miss Congeniality and Legally Blonde. Also, not a fan of shooting games EXCEPT for no build Fortnite.

I only read M/M and my last three tv shows were M/M. But when it comes to gay movies, I only like F/F.

My favourite "horror" movie are The Ritual and Temple. I don't like horror otherwise.

I have read and own a copy of 'Princess Daisy' by Judith Krantz for YEARS. Like...since Jr. High. SO not my type of book. Like, at all. But a friend I rode the school bus with brought her mom's copy to school because there were some sex scenes (and my first f/f explicit sex scene!) in it that of course we had to giggle over.

And the story just got me (though I skip the sex stuff now, heh).

Anybody who knew me, and had only read the first Captive Prince book, would be shocked to know I ADORE the CaPri trilogy. I have an extremely low tolerance for anything remotely noncon-y, and book one of CaPri is pretty darn noncon-y.

I'm indifferent at best to Westerns... except for the "No Name" trilogy.

Two very different movies that are both different from what I normally watch: Twelve Angry Men and Pink Floyd - The Wall.

I'm legendarily shit with cars and driving games in general, but have just started Pacific Drive and I'm really enjoying it. I used to listen to Welcome To Night Vale and the lore/atmosphere hits a lot of the same beats for me, the voice acting is stellar, I find mundane busywork in games satisfying sometimes (I'm a Death Stranding fan which might be related) and the soundtrack is astounding.

I can't stand romantic comedies, finding them neither romantic nor funny, with only three exceptions. Two of them are the Quiet Man and Coming to America and I don't want to say what the other one is.

I hate musicals period full stop, but I love Moulin Rouge. It's not Ewan, it's the nigh-perfect pacing of the visuals and sharp editing, the well-spun layered story, and oh yeah the costumes. Ewan can come along too.

(I have heard that the alterations to the stage show stomp all over the themes and character development, so a hearty fuck you to Broadway yet again)

What's a ship/character you love, but the majority of fandom interprets them differently than you?

(Anonymous) 2025-11-06 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Can be anything you want, including top/bottom preferences. I'm in a glass fucking house over here, I ain't judging.

Sam Bridges/Higgs Moanghan. The fandom loves to woobify Higgs, but in doing that they make Sam, who is most probably autistic, some kind of ace, and most definitely wants people to leave him the hell alone, into a doting, touchy-feely, emotionally smart and available dominant. LOLOLOLOLOLOLNO.

Not necessarily majority, more like 50/50 maybe? And the other interpretation is getting less popular. But when I joined the Silmarillion fandom, the most popular interpretation of Melkor/Sauron basically had Melkor abusing/torturing Sauron and Sauron being almost a bit wooby? And when I started the fandom, I thought that was how it was. But as I read more stuff and my interpretation of Sauron coalesced in my brain more, I started to see that as really OOC. And now I just plain hate that intepretation.

Kylo/Hux. Hux is the dom. Maybe Kylo tops sometimes. But Hux is definately the dom.

Spike/Buffy. Buffy is the dominant in that one, whereas she's the more submissive one when she's with Angel. Honestly, my favorite way to ship them is all three together.

I like the idea of Maedhros/Fingon. But I honestly don't think Maedhros would have wanted or been able to have sex after his imprisonment. I think he was 100% asexual due to trauma.

Apparently a lot of Dean/Castiel shippers prefer Dean as a bottom. But my favorites are always the one I like to be the bottom/sub/omega so I'm the opposite for several fandom ship preferences.

Clex, the 2025 movie version. I am only interested in mainly-bottom!Lex and mainly-top!Clark.

I definitely see Clark/Superman as a Dom (at least when he's with Lex). Mostly a gentle service Dom, but also firm and forceful when Lex is in feral brat mode. I do not see Clark as a perfectly smooth, domineering type though. I think he knows very little about kink, has no idea what he's doing, and the whole thing with Lex is freaking him the heck out, but it just keeps happening. Lex, meanwhile, is wildly obsessed with Superman (and now obsessed with getting absolutely wrecked by Superman) and staunchly in denial about all of it.

The dynamic in the fanfic seems to be fairly divided, but I feel like top-Dom!Lex and sub-Bottom!Clark is a bit more prevalent. Maybe a 60/40 split. And then in so many of the fics where Clark tops, he's all sharp and domineering, and nothing like the big-hearted, dorky cinnamon-roll we see in canon.

I just want my big-hearted, dorky, unfathomably-powerful cinnamon roll with an intuitive knack for Domming feral-brat Billionaires until they've been dicked down so well, so many times that they start to see the light and make better life choices. XD

After watching the first two seasons of Castlevania, I went to AO3 looking for Trevocard fics with top Trevor and bottom Alucard. But the majority of them seem to be the opposite dynamic.

Alucard has exactly the kind of icy poise and studied aloofness (and breathtaking beauty, lbr) that makes me want to see him turned unsteady and frantic and thoroughly undone by desire. Plus, the calm, unflinching way that he accepts personal sacrifice and loneliness in canon makes me want to see him loved and taken care of.

Trevor OTOH is the kind of rough-and-tough but secretly good-hearted character I prefer as a top and a gentle Dom. I think a lot of people choose to make Trevor sexually submissive as a spicy counterpoint to his rugged, "I don't care" attitude. But personally I don't vibe with that. Maybe because I don't think Trevor believes he has control over much of anything in the first place, so to me submission doesn't really serve as a developmental counterpoint for his character. The way I see it, Trevor feels dutybound but also deeply inadequate. He doesn't yearn to submit; he yearns to take effective action, but he doesn't believe he can. And in hardening himself against his own feelings of helplessness and inadequacy, he has cut himself off from relating to others with tenderness and affection.

So to me, the thing that challenges Trevor most deeply, but in a way that holds the most growth potential, is for him to develop tender and protective feelings that he can't seem to shake off - and to develop those feelings specifically for Alucard, someone he believes he should feel only hatred and distrust for.

Not naming the character/canon because they would deanon me, but there's a character (half of my otp) who everyone seems to believe is very noble and saintly and also cheerful, while I interpret him as quite selfish and depressed. (Canonically, he is considered a heretic in the canon's religious setting and is also very keen to sacrifice himself.) This makes consuming the small number of fanworks that aren't by me a disappointing experience, unfortunately.

Dear god, yes, please. I want the Republicans to continue to lose so badly they have to go away fro a long, long time and either regroup and kick out the nutjobs or just go the way of the Whigs and become a completely irrelevant party.

And if Trump could fuck off somewhere where we never had to see or hear him ever again, that'd be great, too.
