That's a shame. Both because that's a really inefficient way to find food pantries and for the desperation. Does your church not maintain a food pantry for occasions like this? Or do any programs around the holidays to sponsor a family? Rather than you carrying the burden by yourself, this seems like an ideal project for the community. Maybe a weekly soup kitchen event?
