Rising hunger / portable food pantry

(Anonymous) 2025-11-09 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I had a church rehearsal this morning for our Christmas concert, and we were just about to start when this late 60s-ish woman came in asking where the food was. We were confused at first like, is there some event we didn't know about? Come to find out, she was there because she saw cars and thought there was a food pantry.

I am by no means well off, but this gutted me. Like, this woman was driving around to try to find any available food. No matter what your politics are, this is just horrific. Yeah, maybe she was a Trump voter who got taken. IDC who she voted for, she shouldn't be hungry.

Anyway, it's got me thinking about pre-packing some bags with food to carry around in my trunk. Not like we can afford much, I mean I cook dried beans to save money, but this is utterly heartbreaking, and every single person reading this is one catastrophe from being in her shoes.

That's a shame. Both because that's a really inefficient way to find food pantries and for the desperation. Does your church not maintain a food pantry for occasions like this? Or do any programs around the holidays to sponsor a family? Rather than you carrying the burden by yourself, this seems like an ideal project for the community. Maybe a weekly soup kitchen event?

That's not a bad idea if you have a car, and it's kind of you to try and help when you're not well off yourself.

Yeah idk, this is gonna be bad, especially in states that didn't shovel SNAP funds out the door in the brief window between court shenanigans. Here's hoping justice Jackson's maneuvering pays off (my understanding is her stay requires the Supreme Court to make a decision ASAP, and not take one of the other options that would've let them kick the can down the road for months.)

One of my coworkers used to spring for handwarmers to hand out at our work when it rains or gets super cold, and now a couple of us take it in turns. Another serves food at a church on his lunch break once a week. During COVID lockdown I still had to go to work after the first couple weeks, but we were closed to the public, and I started handing out snack bags with fruit and cheese and crackers and stuff to our homeless regulars who still hung out outside.

We haven't had anybody ask for food outright recently, but it's happened before and if things keep going like this, it'll probably happen again. I hand out fruit when we host a garden swap, and I'm raising hens from chicks right now, so if this bullshit is as bad or worse by spring, I'll have eggs to share, too. I guess if I prioritize my homeless neighbors, I'll have to hand out boiled eggs because they won't have anyplace to cook them.

Ugh, I hate this. Richest country in the world, and first the assholes destroyed USAID, and now they're bringing starvation home. If that ballroom ever gets finished, maybe the dipshits who wanted and greenlit and funded it while children went hungry can get locked in for a month.

I think it might be more effective to donate to blessing boxes and keep a list handy of their locations. If your town/city doesn’t have a list of them available online somewhere, it’s a good idea to post one to social media of any sort and save the link. Then you can tell anyone in need where to find the list. I’d also check local SM groups (Facebook and Reddit in particular) to see if anyone is including food in their Little Free Library. You can also set up a box on your own property. In my town, Boy Scouts are building them for anyone who wants to set one up.

My local schools system has been accepting food donations. I bought 6 packs of ramen to donate. Sadly, none of the churches around us have food pantries. :/

That would have left me sobbing and feeling so terrible. Yesterday I had a little cry just thinking of the cruelty of the Supreme Court's ruling on delaying SNAP benefits.

That's a great idea to carry some food items with you just in case something similar happens again.

I just watched a Kylie Sakaida short where she bagged up bean soup meals. She's a dietitian whose videos were recc'd to me and some of her tips have been revolutionary for me. Hopefully this video can inspire some food prepping ideas?

If she can drive then she can work. She seems mentally unstable or just very used to spend her days begging instead of working. I hope it's the second because she's a danger to other drivers otherwise. Old drivers are dangerous in general without the crazy added to the mix. One old lady hit me while I was cycling and wanted to leave me on the crib but couldn't because of my bike blocking the way. Hit and run from an old lady.

And no, I'm not one single step away from that. I don't drive when I'm confused or drugged.

Careful you don’t hurt yourself with that stretch. Also, you mistook catastrophe as step. Perhaps you shouldn’t comment on FS when you’re confused or drugged.

I didn't. Driving while while mentally unstable is a choice.

Why yes, you ARE shit at empathy. Glad we could confirm that.

Working doesn't mean you bring home a paycheck big enough to cover your food expenses. Housing prices are out of control, people's electric bills are going up thanks to the fucking billionaires and their obsession with AI, and the federal minimum wage hasn't gone up in 15+ years.

And OP's post was about a person looking to meet their needs in a country where those in charge are deliberately making that harder by the day. Nobody asked for your judgment or about your unrelated experiences with unrelated people.
