I think I could've enjoyed Sherlock more if they'd called it something else, and not made it into a modern AU that messed with Holmes' characterization and proceeded to mangle Irene Adler and Moriarty's characters so badly. As it was, Sherlock is basically House: Private Detective.

Only... House did it better.

No I agree OP, Sherlock is basically modern AU fanfic as it is but it absolutely should have just ran with that and been an ‘inspired by’ kind of thing than trying to modernise the canon because I really did not do a good job of that. Nor is it really a detective or murder mystery show either.

It kind of started off leaning towards being a detective show, but the series very quickly became about the characters and their relationship rather than the cases. I didn't like that.

I have no great love for Sherlock - I watched the first season, which I liked, but then didn't watch any more (heard a lot about the second season before it was available in the US). But since House basically had a set plan to be Sherlock Holmes, but tweaked (House, not Holmes, Wilson, not Watson; Irregulars, I mean residents; addiction due to pain, not experimentation; Rebecca Adler, not Irene; etc.), while Sherlock just seemed to be trying to be modern and clever, I'm not surprised. Maybe there was more of a plan with Sherlock, but if there was, I don't think everybody agreed on what the plan was.

For me, Sherlock Holmes is one of those media properties that I am totally fine with adapting in all sorts of ways, even if they aren't very true to the source material. The more the merrier, keep 'em coming, and if one doesn't work for me, oh well.

With that said, I can understand why not everyone feels that way, and I'm sure if I cared about how well Sherlock Holmes adaptations honored the source material, then even the first two seasons of Sherlock (the ones I actually like) would rub me the wrong way.

The only reason to watch any of Sherlock was to enjoy Rupert Graves during his peak silver fox era.

Can't argue with that, the man looked DAMN good in Sherlock.

He was SO HOT in that shitshow!

Sort of OT, but even though I knew House was inspired by Holmes, I just now realized it's even reflected in the name. Holmes, homes; houses are homes.

No way lol, I never thought of that.
