My old car has repairs due that are more expensive than the car is worth and the repair shop is reluctant to do anything because they say it's not worth it but I don't have the money for a new (used) car so I'm not sure what to do.

Try another repair shop, if at all possible - if not, be really persistent that you want these repairs done. At the end of the day, unless they're concerned (genuinely) that the car is fundamentally unsafe and they would have any liability for that, money should be money to them.

If you're a woman, frustrating as it is I would recommend going there with an older man as well.
