IRL, pollen is my enemy. (stupid pesky allergies)

But in fanfiction, I love me some sex pollen and I always will. Yes, it messes with the issue of consent.

That's what makes it hot.

Hear, hear OP.

Yeah it's morally fuzzy on consent, but when they both want it and the sex-pollen just makes it happen faster I am THERE. I just like it.

It’s not necessarily a favourite trope of mine, but when I like it, it’s exactly because it messes with consent within the context of the story. If I just wanted OOC fucking without that, there’s plenty of PWP fic with no plot reason for the sex.

(Also, I once put forward the tentative argument that sex pollen is to shipping/sex as “blood lusted” is to battleboarding/fights. There are definite gaps in the comparison, but it was fun to hammer out some of the finer points, especially when I had to try and explain sex pollen and fuck-or-die and other common fanfic tropes to battleboarder/powerscaler fans.)

I love it as a sexy prompt but I also love when it doesn't end with the people involved together (and when both are treated as victims).

Same!
I love them being just desperate and sexy. But also the psychology and drama of it all is interesting

I like it as a "your brain says no or 'bad idea' but your body says yes and the sex pollen just makes it imperative to get your rocks off right now" thing. I guess that's dub rather than non con. I don't want it to end in romance necessarily, just two (or more) people being overcome by their biological urges and rocking each other's worlds and having no regrets but let's not speak of this again, etc.

Agreed.

I love me some sex pollen fics, especially with ships where there's a lot of very good reasons why they shouldn't fuck (i.e. huge age gap and/or one is underage, they have a mentor/mentee dynamic, they're enemies, they're related, etc.)

The one thing that perpetually saddens me about sex pollen fics is that most of them are one-shots that only care about the sex pollen encounter itself. Which is cool and all, but SO much less appealing to me than long fics that start with a sex pollen encounter in the first chapter or two, and then go on to explore the fallout of that sex pollen encounter at length. Like, "We're enemies, but I can't stop thinking about those sounds you made/things you said/the way you felt when we fucked." Or, "You're 18 and I'm your much older mentor, and I was doing a pretty good job of repressing my attraction to you, but now that I've had you, I can't even look at you without a pandora's box of depraved shit running through my head." Etc. etc.

God that shit is my jam.

I will unashamedly enjoy a PWP oneshot with sex pollen as an element but god you're so right about the relative lack of exploring the implications further. Off the top of my head there's only one fic I've read in any of my fandoms where that happened - though there was extra shadiness because it was sex pollen that required curing via sex magic and the magic wielder wasn't entirely honest about things at first (there was a bit of a fall out from that too.)

I'm not very fandom omnivorous, so the odds are the fic won't be in a fandom I read for, but I'm curious what fic this is? It sounds like a really intriguing premise.

on the topic of consent

I used to enjoy a few sex pollen fic but I started to notice a trend, at least in the fandom spaces I was in at the time, where they would have all this set up about consent before the sex pollen and then even during the sex pollening they'd have all these thoughts or even conversations on consent to make sure everyone involved (but especially the reader!) knew that it was all okay! And like, why even write sex pollen if you're not into exploring that whole thing of messing with consent and control? Always struck me as odd.

If they were setting it up to explore how people feel about theoretical consent and control versus actual consent and control, that could be interesting. I doubt they are, but I feel like that could be such a multidimensional issue to dig into. Like, if the characters involved had an agreement about somnophilia, but then after being sex pollened, one of them was fine with it because of the discussions for somnophilia, but one ended up feeling strange about the sex pollen episode and had to sort out why.

Ayrt and yeah, I'm with you on that it could be an interesting exploration! Sadly this was not that.

I have a very low tolerance for noncon. When it comes to sex pollen, I don't enjoy the kind where one or both of the characters go completely feral and can't even communicate with each other during, or control how fast and rough they're being at all. Especially if the top goes feral, and the bottom can't do anything but brace and endure, that's way too heavy on the concon element for me.

HOWEVER, there's a lot of ground between "They went into a mindless sexual frenzy," and, "They discussed it thoroughly and proceeded to have sex in a manor befitting of two people creating an educational video on consent."

Even I have a point where I feel like the loving, doting consensual-ness of the sex has been emphasized so thoroughly that it has completely neutralized any sort of erotic tension the sex pollen could have brought to the scene. Like, if the characters have nothing to feel conflicted about, then what's even the point of them being sex pollened in the first place?

This arguably qualifies as decent consensual sex pollen: https://archiveofourown.org/works/8691352/chapters/19925962

This is the sort of thing that makes me wanna be like, "don't worry, author. I'm not going to try to cancel you."

That is exactly the vibe!
