The Lone Gunmen on X-Files. Yes, I know about the comics, and I think that was a cheap "have your cake and eat it too" thing.

+10000000 The absolute worst. It was so completely unnecessary, and it also made Mulder and Scully going on the lam a couple episodes later for the finale a lot less interesting to think about. TLG would've been able to play such an important role in helping them and being contacts for them, etc. but without TLG in the picture it was so much harder to imagine what the heck they were going to do.
