I mean, ACD didn't kill Mary Morstan off "on screen", but I guess you could argue he killed her off because her character is described as having died around the point of "The Adventure of the Norwood Builder" and no cause of death is mentioned.

Agreed with you about the rest of it, though.

I've gotta reread the Norwood Builder because I don't remember that at all.

She mostly disappears pretty quickly after her initial appearance in "The Sign of Four". IIRC there's a brief mention or two of her encouraging Watson to join Holmes on a case? Or mentioned in passing in conversation between Holmes and Watson but she doesn't really figure as a recurring character, and then she's mentioned as having passed away which conveniently left Watson free to participate in more cases and (I think) move back to Baker Street.
