but I do think they have a point

i'm an oldest daughter, family comfortably middle class and parents overall loving and emotionally mature, only did minimal babysitting stuff -

but I STILL relate to a lot of 'oldest daughter syndrome narratives' because even though no one explicitly Put It On Me that it was my job to be diplomat/caretaker/manager of others emotions, I somehow absorbed that idea. I never changed my brother's diapers (way too close in age) but I feel responsible for him. when my mom was in a bad place while I was in college and I didn't call her back (I was also in a very bad place that year), I felt guilty for YEARS that I hadn't been there for her, in a way that went beyond 'I let down someone I love' and into "I failed in my duty As The Daughter to support/soothe/encourage/lift up my family". We weren't conversative! We weren't even Christian! But we did live in Texas and some of that was just in the groundwater I guess. Even in my thirties, if anyone is upset, I have a deep feeling in my gut that I Need To Fix It, even if what I actually need to do is leave it the fuck alone.

IDK man, everything we want to be binary is actual spectral. There's a lot of different cultural expectations and class contexts creating variation in how stuff manifests and also the same cultural forces can have different impacts on different people. "I'm an oldest daughter and I don't relate to this" is an argument against Oldest Daughter Syndrome being clear cut/universal, but not an argument that it isn't a thing or is limited to families in poverty or abusive families. Birth order is literally one of the ONLY things that has some consistent correlations with personality. There's something there, and it IS silly and childish to dismiss it out of hand based on a single data point.
