(Anonymous) 2025-11-22 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)Not to say I'm a curmudgeon who glares at the merch and people who buy them. I've glanced at some of the Wicked merch because I thought they looked good.
But you know, I'm still fatigued by so much of this capitalist way of creating collective experiences.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-22 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)I don't know if they did this just for the tie-in product, but using paper wrappers over the wax instead of plastic is something Babybel should do all the time now. You can recycle that paper!

(Anonymous) 2025-11-22 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)I think that some things are over the top-- slapping 'wicked' on the packaging of something isn't going to make me buy it. But, like... with the Stranger Things branded grocery items, some of it is stuff I'm buying either way. I love the feeling of like... you know, my childhood self would have wanted some kind of colorful tie-in breakfast cereal that we were not going to buy. Now sometimes my adult self gets to buy the cute version of things. Cheese with Stranger Things packaging, mac and cheese shaped like something cute. Baked beans with Bluey on them, what have you. If it's grocery items that I need either way, I'm all for whimsy, but it can still be a turn off when you walk into a store and EVERYTHING is jumping on the SAME branding bandwagon. It stops being a special thing.
Hm... I think maybe to me there's also a difference between TV and movie marketing? Like, I have a family member with Netflix, so I've watched Stranger Things. Bluey or Spongebob come on TV. I guess some of the Mario stuff is for the movies and not the game series, but like... Mario is also just a guy I know, you know? I had a friend with a Nintendo system as a child, seeing Mario shaped macaroni doesn't make me feel pressured to buy a film ticket. Just like seeing Sonic stuff roll out when that was in theaters was just like 'oh, there's a video game mascot from my childhood' rather than a feeling of 'BUY A TICKET TO THIS MOVIE THIS IS THE BIG MOVIE'.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-23 12:56 am (UTC)(link)The tie-ins aren't going to make me buy anything I wasn't going to buy anyway, but I was once tempted by some Mean Girls Toaster Strudels, because this is so funny and stupid. https://www.foodandwine.com/thmb/QSnn0xqpCwlYBvCgP8cebqi_Un4=/750x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/Mean-Girls-Toaster-Strudel-2-FT-BLOG0920-08af7968de8549f0bccf083bc9ea27a7.jpg

(Anonymous) 2025-11-22 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)If media merch blitzes were all themed that way, I'd be way less grumpy about the endless grind of collabs for things I can't be arsed to care about. But of course the vast majority has to be 'huge corporation slapping a media graphic on their product and calling it a day' shit. Just put in the tiniest bit of effort, corpos! I would mind so much less!
