Not wanting to waste things I don't like

(Anonymous) 2025-11-22 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone else struggle with this? I am a lip balm fiend, and I have one that I don't really like, but I don't hate it enough to throw it away. But I'm not enjoying it, PLUS the tube has gotten kind of sticky, and I keep hoping it'll be used up soon, but it seems like I have found a lip balm that is never going to end because every time I turn the dial more product comes up.....

It would probably make more sense to just put it in the trash but I hate to waste it.

I'm this way with basically anything I spent money on. If it was gifted I'm okay tossing it if I'm not enjoying it, but if I spent money on it I have that guilt about wasting the product and my money so I suffer through it. Or I shove it in a drawer thinking I'll use it one day, until I get the urge to purge and in the trash it suddenly goes.

yeah. if it's food, I power through until it's gone. if it's an item that isn't working, I try to give away, donate, or sell it. I've even taken apart clothing to repurpose collars, sleeves, hoods, whatever I can sew into something else. there's a world of difference between something just not working for me and something being actually unviable and deserving of being chucked.

I was super poor for a long time, and right now bc economy and doge, I'm that poor again for now. I have never lost the poor mentality, I can't waste anything. I even lament a potato that went bad before I ate it, I compost but it's still about 50 cents lost, it's frustrating.

As a mom friend, I give you permission to toss it and get a better lip balm.

Thank you... I just went ahead and trashed it. I used over half of it and I tried to power through, but it was just too much.

I’m not like that for something so small and insignificant. Especially if it’s a choice between something I don’t like and something I like. Life is short and it really, really sucks. I don’t have the spoons for shitty lip balm.

I totally get you, and agree. I just threw it away. I have other lip balms on hand that I do like and enjoy using, so that one is history.

I would normally give it to someone, but seeing as it's a lip balm I might either try using it inside or throw it away.

I've been there. Lotions I don't like, foods I don't like, clothes that looked/felt good at the store but after wearing them a couple times I don't like anymore, expensive skincare ToT

I try to use it up or repurpose it because I don't want to be wasteful. Is there a way you can repurpose it? Blend with another lip balm?
It's also OK to throw away a small half used up tube of lip balm, especially if the effort to keep using it doesn't even have the benefit of keeping your lips soft and crust free, etc. You've done your best to use it and in the grand scheme of things this is nowhere near as wasteful as people who wouldn't have even thought to keep trying to use it like you have been.

I ended up trashing it... I decided I gave it enough of a try. It was over halfway gone. If anyone is curious, it's Ulta brand Jelly Bomb. The texture is kind of squishy, which I loved! 10/10 on that. But it felt like it didn't moisturize my lips at all, and it just left them sticky and needing to reapply something quickly. And the flavor was berry, really artificial gross cheap raspberry-ish.

Depends. I live in a 600 sqft two-bedroom apartment, which curbs any "hoarding" tendencies I may have otherwise had. (I put hoarding in quotes because actual hoarding disorder is its own thing and deserves to be taken seriously.)

If it's reasonably nutritious food, I eat it. If it's junk food, I throw it out. I've gotten to a point where I mostly view food as fuel. I don't need to enjoy it, but if I dislike it and it doesn't nourish me, then it's better off in the trash.

Clothes I sell on Poshmark, if they'll fetch enough to be worth the effort. Of not, then I give them away.

Makeup I tend to keep, because it doesn't take up much space, but after several years I'll give items away or throw them away.

I give away junk jewelry, and drugstore haircare and skincare if I really have no desire to use it.
