Mass Blackout

(Anonymous) 2025-11-23 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone else participating?

I wasn't going to spend on anything but groceries, gas, and bills anyway. Because I can't afford to. So I'm in.

This is the first I’ve heard of it. TBH I’d be shocked if anyone who isn’t single/childless/renter participates. I’m aware that still means a lot of people but I’m not sure they’re the target for holiday spending, anyway.

Yes, because I’m broke and making all my gifts this year.

Details?

Haven't heard of anything, is this just a black friday thing or something specific?

I can't read that website. I have an eye disorder where I can't read white text on black background or heavy contrast like that (that's not the actual disorder, that's just a side effect). I'll just assume it's a no buying for holidays random blackout thing.

Here is a USA Today news article summarizing the movement.

Thank you for that link. I had actually gone and looked up a few sites on my own too because my curiosity was piqued.

Is this the anti-consumer No Spend Thanksgiving or Blackout Friday?

There are a number of no-spend initiatives. The one linked above targets cyber week, November 25 - December 2.

Hadn't heard of it, but I mostly buy from small businesses anyway.

Spending is going to be down this season generally, I think. A lot of people are broke!

I think you’re right spending is going to be way down. But people will still buy stuff for their kids at the lowest prices of the year from the retailers with the lowest prices. That isn’t going to be small businesses, it’s going to be Amazon and Walmart.

Personally I think the blackouts are kind of performative and it makes a lot more sense to alter your buying habits all around than do one blackout during the holidays. But I get that a lot of protest is performative and more to bring awareness than anything else so I get why people participate and why these can be important to a lot of people.

All that to say, no I'm not participating. But I also don't shop most big store retailers (no amazon, target, etc) year round and try and spend on smaller local businesses when I can.
