Favorite Fictional Universes

[personal profile] philstar22 2025-11-23 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Which fictional universes are your favorites? The ones you think are the most interesting, the most complex, the most thought through, the ones that are the most internally consistent. Whatever criteria you want, just the ones you love the most.

Obviously Middle Earth is my top favorite. The Star Wars one is also really interesting to me.

Warhammer and Warcraft are both fascinating to me. I'm not actually in the fandoms, but I like reading about the worlds. Same with the Dungeons and Dragons world, I've only watched the recent movie, but it made me want to learn more about the world it is set in. I just love this type of super complex universe with millions of moving parts that are expansive and complex but still make sense and work together.

I really like the Buffy world. What makes it so interesting to me is that the universe is actually pretty terrible, and yet humanity has managed to hold its own, push back the darkness, and actually make things better.

I really love the world of Valdemar by Mercedes Lackey. Idk if it's the most complex or consistent, but it is a world I enjoy going back to again and again via various series set in it.

I do wonder how they'd hit for the first time now, as some of it can be quite dated but I have the nostalgia goggles so I can easily skim over that and ignore it. I wonder if I had read it for the first time today if I'd be able to do that and enjoy it in the same way.

I love Valdemar. It is a really interesting world. Those books are fun. And I only read them for the first time a few years ago.

I do still recommend them to fantasy readers. I just let them know that some of the plots are quite weak (and others are quite strong; she's very inconsistent on plotting ability) but that her writing really shines with making you feel as the character feels.

And that, yeah, some of it's a bit dated but not offensively so, and overall, Valdemar holds up really well.

Pokemon for comfort. I'd love to live in that world.

Legend of Zelda/Hyrule for just really loving the world.

The Harry Potter universe. Yes, it's full of inconsistencies and silly details that aren't practical, but it feels populated, and sprawling, and lively, and enduring to me in a way that is very rare. With that said, fanfic has really done a lot for the HP universe IMO. Canon provided a sprawling, lively mess, but fanfic really took what was there and started pinning and tucking and trimming and polishing it in ways that brought it much more into focus and got a lot more depth and genuine coherence out of it.

I agree about fic. The books themselves I feel ended up being more inconsistant, but fic really fleshed it out and made it fun. Honestly this is still one of the fandoms I read the most fics for even if I've left the books behind.

I agree. The first few books in particular, I honestly think a large part of the reason why they blew up so much is because of Hogwarts lol. The world is just close enough to real life, with just enough magic, to make it seem really appealing. The idea of roaming around this castle and casting spells is just great.

Middle-earth is my second home. Almost literally - I was born in the Shire-equivalent, though I don't live there now. I go back when I can.

I've spent a lot of time in the Star Trek universe and love that too, though it's not very consistent and occasionally infuriating.

Yes! Middle Earth is a great second home. Also, I think Trek is the universe that I feel would be the best to live in. Even if yes, it does have issues at times and has inconsistencies.

I don't think I'd want to live in it, but I love the world of One Piece; it's one of those fictional universes where the world feels so vast and infinitely explorable.

Those big, sprawling universes are my favorite.

Me too. I'd never want to live there but the world and it's history is so interesting. I love it when something new is revealed and it just fits into the rest of the established world.

I love Tamriel from the Elder Scrolls! I think that probably is my very favorite. But it isn’t a world I spend a lot of time thinking about unless I’m playing one of the games.

I also love the world of Skulduggery Pleasant, although I prefer the version the audience is first introduced to. Partway through there are some major changes to the magic system and the geography and I don’t like either.

Narnia.
The one inside my head where I am not a fuck-up and everything's much better.

Ooh, yes. That's a nice one. Though I think I'd prefer Archenland to Narnia itself.

I might be biased because i'm seriously in hyperfixation space right now. But with even MORE new canon.... Hellaverse is becoming even more fun to play in/with. I look forward (but also am a little nervous about) what more we may find out

But right now I enjoy writing fic and inventing sinner and hellborn OCs and exploring stuff that happened before. It's fun

Discworld, Star Trek, and Oz (I like both the books and the movie... but it was perhaps the Return to Oz movie that had the biggest impact on me as a child. I have not yet seen wicked but I like Stephen Schwartz as a composer and I love Jeff Goldblum so like... I'm sure at some point I wILL, but I don't expect it to be Oz to me, despite my general flexibility)-- that's the lifelong trifecta.

Oh man yes. Return to Oz is great. And I grew up on the Oz books. Personally I don't like the movie, mainly because of the "all a dream" thing. But I do love the soundtrack for both the movie and Wicked.

Oz, yes!!! I need to reread those books. I bet they're still at my parents' house but I wonder if I can find them on ebook.

This question again? It gets asked every couple of weeks.

Still same answers too.

Oh, and The Culture is obviously superior to all.

The ones I love most:
Final Fantasy VII compilation ... I mean Gongaga as the name of a nothing town is kind of gold, lol.

Roswell original tv series/books, too - mostly I loved the characters but I also loved the idea of planet Antar and the bits of alien lore we got, too.
