The Harry Potter universe. Yes, it's full of inconsistencies and silly details that aren't practical, but it feels populated, and sprawling, and lively, and enduring to me in a way that is very rare. With that said, fanfic has really done a lot for the HP universe IMO. Canon provided a sprawling, lively mess, but fanfic really took what was there and started pinning and tucking and trimming and polishing it in ways that brought it much more into focus and got a lot more depth and genuine coherence out of it.

I agree about fic. The books themselves I feel ended up being more inconsistant, but fic really fleshed it out and made it fun. Honestly this is still one of the fandoms I read the most fics for even if I've left the books behind.

I agree. The first few books in particular, I honestly think a large part of the reason why they blew up so much is because of Hogwarts lol. The world is just close enough to real life, with just enough magic, to make it seem really appealing. The idea of roaming around this castle and casting spells is just great.
