US Thanksgiving

(Anonymous) 2025-11-25 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I know a lot of people don't really do Thanksgiving anymore, but for those of you that do - what are your plans?

I have Thursday and Friday off and am hosting family. We don't really do a 'traditional' dinner or anything, just a good time to get together and spend time eating and playing games and visiting. I am sort of looking forward to it and sort of super stressed about it. Family stuff has been a little extra stressful since my mom died (coming up on 3 years now). We all still get along, but it's just a very different dynamic and of course the grief hits harder around the holidays.

I also have Thursday/Friday off. My sister is coming up Wednesday and we will all cook Thursday. This year my niece's birthday is on the same day, so we will be celebrating both. I wish I could convince people to play board games. :( Hopefully everyone will be out of the house by 4pm and I can sleep all the food off.

ayrt - oh god, out by 4pm would be a dream. We are a usually going until 9pm or later. But part of that is that we do play board games, so things can get a little involved. It's fun, but also a loooong day.

We just preorder food these days. I kind of miss the chaos of everyone in the kitchen cooking the day of, but it's easier this way. We don't have as many people gathering so the giant dinner just doesn't make sense for us.

Oh no. We are an early food house. Sometimes I have them over for a Sunday dinner and I'll literally tell them, "I'm tired of people now so time for everyone to wrap and go home."

Just had an image in my head of you saying "I'm tired now. Please leave. Goodbye." :D

They know I'm an introvert thankfully. I've even told them, "I am going into my room. You can stay, just don't bother me." They are good sports.

I'd be happy to play board games with you

I hear you, OP. My mother passed away more than five years ago and initially holidays were really rough. They've balanced out now, but it's still sad that she's not there.

ayrt - yeah there is always that hole that is harder to ignore when everyone gets together. It doesn't help that my mom passed away in early December, so the 'anniversary' is right smack in the middle of all the holidays. It gets a little easier each year, but it'll never not be a think we are thinking about.

Shift work household here. Normally Thursday is our Sunday but because of the holiday it’s our Monday this week. It’s Saturday night at my house right now and we’re having a relaxing weekend doing small chores around the house and a lot of lazing around with the pets while reading or playing video games. On Thanksgiving we’re going to a local buffet after work. It’s our second year doing this and I am thrilled not to deal with the grocery shopping and the cooking and the cleaning and the hosting. I’m happy to come home to a spotless kitchen and curl up with my pets and fall straight to sleep LOL

Well, we were going to go to the house of one of my mother's friends, she's doing a big thing. But I now have the flu, so my plans are mostly to sleep and rest over the long weekend.

I work night shift and don't get holidays off, so I'll have to eat dinner with the family early and then go to work. At least I get extra Holiday pay, though.

My dad passed five months ago now and while I don't celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas is something I'm not looking forward to.

I am so sorry for your loss. It's fucking hard. My mom passed away suddenly in the beginning of December so the holidays that year were a total mess. This will be year three Christmas without her and it's gotten easier compared to those first two but it still isn't easy.

Be kind to yourself during this season and definitely reach out for whatever support you have when you need it, including posting here if you just need to vent or whatever. Even the little things can help in those tough moments.

I'm so sorry. Holidays are so hard when you miss somebody you love.

I'm having dinner at my sister's club with her, her husband, my niece, my niece's husband and this friend of my sister's. I'm super looking forward to it. I've had to spend the past several Thanksgivings alone and I wasn't too happy about this.

I'm leaving tomorrow morning to travel back to my hometown where I'll be staying a few days with family. Got a lot of mixed feelings about it. I love my family, but I don't love being trapped in the same house with them for several days with not enough room to withdraw and recharge. I plan to take walks, but it's going to be unpleasantly cold out and that won't be a lot of fun.

We don't have any big traditions aside from cooking and eating. I tried to float the idea of board games one year, but the older people weren't into it. :(
