Characters that ruined their fandom for you

[personal profile] philstar22 2025-11-26 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any characters you disliked so much they made it impossible or close to impossible to enjoy whatever fandom they were in?

Tony Stark/Dr. House/Sherlock's Sherlock - at some point the "Super Smart Asshole Who's Always Right" stopped being fun and started filling me with hate. Can't even reread some of the fics I used to love.

But usually if I dislike a character so much I just don't like the thing and thus don't even think about it.

That is also a character trope I hate. They don't always ruin a thing for me. But jerks and anti-heroes are usually not among my favorite characters. I did like House, though, at least the first few seasons. For some reason he's the only one of that character type that has worked for me.

I get you. I don't mind it so much if this type of character is a small part, or if they have significant growth. But the ones where they just rock on without ever changing, I strongly dislike. Also a lot of people tend to latch onto these as their favorite characters and obsess over them, which just makes me dislike them even more.

Shadow the Hedgehog. I liked him well enough during SA2, Heroes and his own game but for gods sake stop beating the fucking horse and let him die.

Watched The Untamed and have read MDZS(I wanted to see what was changed) and I absolutely cannot stand Wei Wuxian in any capacity, lol, so yeah this makes being anywhere near then fandom just a little impossible for me. But I was only into a few side ships for about 4 months before I got bored so it wasn’t that bad, I just mostly stuck to fic and didn’t try to chat to other fans.

When the main character of something is an asshole and we're only rooting for them because their enemies are worse, I'm probably not going to like the thing. Breaking Bad is a good example. the main character is terrible and there really isn't anyone to root for.

Sheppard and McKay ruined Stargate: Atlantis for me. They seem to be everyone's favorite, but for me they were both obnoxious man-children who somehow kept getting rewarded by the narrative.

this was one reason I could never stand watching Breaking Bad. So many people were pushing me to watch it, too and I always dug my heels in.
then again, I looooooooooove Boardwalk Empire and almost every character in that is a killer, some sort of crook or at least a huge liar....

I understand you about Sheppard and McKay. I liked them well enough, but I think the show focus too much on them, and I often felt like the writers wanted to live vicariously through them.

Dunno. You can root for WW to die and he does. Happy ending, fun all around.
I am absolutely serious, I had so much fun rooting against him

Negan on The Walking Dead. He made me stop watching the show and I held on forever.

I never watched the show because I don't do zombies, but I read that they somehow tried to make him have a redemption arc that didn't really work. I hate that. I like villains, I like redemption arcs, but when they don't work, it just ruins everything. With a character who did as much truly awful as he seems to have, a redemption arc is difficult and and takes a whole lot of work that they clearly didn't put into it.

Lucifer's daughter Roxy. Way to ruin a childfree character with a 2edgy4u girl.

Loki

(Anonymous) 2025-11-27 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I just find him annoying and boring in the movies but gods above and below do I hate him in fandom.

I actually really enjoyed the character in the first few movies but it got old pretty fast after a while. By the time of the TV series I was completely done with him (actually way before that but the series was the nail in the coffin). And his fandom certainly didn't help.

Yor's brother is making me procrastinate on continuing Spy x Family. Yor herself pushes it sometimes too, but I think it's the fanon version of her coloring my view of canon (she isn't a badass, fandom, she's a loser masquerading as a badass, just like her "husband." but fandom only notices man is a fake. Badasses are boring, losers are awesome.)

Favorite horror movies without gore?

(Anonymous) 2025-11-27 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
I used to love gorey movies but after going through some medical issues, I got a lot more sensitive to it. My wife likes horror a lot and I'd love to find something new to watch together. What are your favorite horrors with no/light gore?

Re: Favorite horror movies without gore?

(Anonymous) 2025-11-27 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Poltergeist - there's one scene in the bathroom with one of the investigators
The Craft - there is some body horror, but it's pretty brief
Happy Death Day - it's a slasher and a lot of people die, but most of the actual death is off screen
The Birds - the bird attacks may be horrifying, but there's not much gore to them
The Sixth Sense - some of the dead people are a little gross, but I wouldn't say there's anything too gory (really, a lot of Shyamalan's movies are more psychological horror)
