I think back then, people could afford a shitty job and still provide for their family and give them company.

Hell, in the 90s, Homer was considered to be a dull person with a mediocre job and barely middle class. I think it speaks a lot the fact that Homer formerly planned to have an even poorer job as a bowling alley worker, and quit his job at the nuclear power plant, before they got Maggie.

Today, all of that is utterly unthinkable for most people. A millennial couple in their late 30s, owning a house, raising three kids, and with only one job? That is just mythical. Now that things are going further and further into the shitter, one job is so laughably insufficient to provide for yourself, let alone a family, people don't want kids.
