I'm going to go ahead and say I saw a serious breaking down of barriers between fans and performers/creators that began with Smallville and since there was so much overlap with Supernatural, some of the more, uh, invested SPN fans just took it and ran with it.

And while a lot of the heavy kink stuff was absolutely around beforehand (*cough*X-Files*cough*), it did seem to become so much more visible and accessible with Supernatural, but part of that was probably down to timing - Castiel was introduced in fall of 2008, the kinkmeme started in 2009, and AO3 started open beta in 2009.

Right? I still remember fans gifting Lex Luthor's actor sex toys...

Hahaha! I was trying to remember which actor I heard that about!
