I’m very very jealous of people who have books that were impactful to them when they were younger, and that started to read interesting books early. Not only did I struggle with learning reading, personal reasons, but my parents didn’t particularly incentivize me and I attribute this to me being such a slog of a reader despite liking books.

- Rarely finishing books or not reading that many a year -

I’m an aunt, and I try to compensate by getting books for my nieces and nephew to keep at my mother’s, who stays with them a lot, but no dice outside short-lived passing curiosity. I know you can’t force it, not trying to, but it’s one of the few things I wish I could “live through them”.

I'm really sorry, anon. I've been a reader ever since I learned how, and I'm really thankful that my parents encouraged me. I wish all parents did. I think it's awesome that you're encouraging your nieces/nephew, maybe it will sink in somewhat over time. These days in particular, it seems as though it must be really difficult for books to compete with screens and all the electronic gadgets all over the place.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-02 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I didn't read much as a kid. I basically started reading as a teen and even then it was a slog. To be perfectly honest, while I adore reading as an adult, it still tends to be a slog. I can't even blame my parents, my mom was a voracious reader and while she didn't read to us, the house was always full of books, she was never without a book to read, and she was always encouraging us to read. She tried so hard to find books that would interest me, but it just never clicked until I was much older.

I am now that aunt that always gifts books (plus a toy/clothes/whatever) and even if my nieces and nephews never read them I believe in the power of subconscious encouragement (I can't think of a better term atm). Like even if they are not reading them, having books around them and getting new books each year still plays a part in forming their perception of the world and surroundings. And who knows, maybe one day the reading bug will bite and then they'll have all these books waiting for them right there.

Yeah, I've tried with my niece and nephew and have not been very successful. :(

(Anonymous) 2025-12-02 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
It is really heartwarming you're trying to make a difference for your niblings. Please keep it up! Could be they just need the right book/series to "click" with. This happened for both my siblings. Depending on the kids, age appropriate graphic novels could be a good entry point.

You are a great aunt! (But not a great-aunt.)

(Anonymous) 2025-12-02 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
You're an awesome auntie.

The key to getting kids interested in reading is to read in front of them and read little exciting snippets saying "listen to this..."

Pick adventure books on subjects she's interested in. Also, when she's old enough, show her how to find books on subjects that interest her or about genres that she likes.

Tbf I WAS an active reader as a child. Like comically so. Very nerdy.

I don't read now. At all. Yesterday I've read some thriller book, I didn't especially like it, but was surprised to learn that I still can have fun reading. Apparently I managed to get into my head that there are books that I NEED to read instead of just enjoying. And stopped reading at all...

How old are the nieces and nephews? My brother and I were big readers from early, but our youngest brother wasn't interested until he got to about 11 and suddenly he really got into it and is a big reader to this day.

As a fellow aunt/uncle, read with the kiddos!! It can be a special book between the two of you. You can read a few pages or a chapter together, and then follow it up by asking questions and giving your own thoughts. There might even be special events you can do together.

Once I babysat my nephew, and I was trying to find ways to entertain him. I read "The Composer is Dead" by Lemony Snicket because I had a copy on my bookshelf. We listened to the audio book recording of it too. He completely fell in love with it. XD
My nephew brings up Vivaldi and Mozart as names to shout and he knows they're composers (and composers make music), but we're still working on filling in gaps about orchestral music and why composers are remembered.

It can spark an interest in books for you and your siblings' kids.

I've stopped buying battle passes for the games I play and I'm a lot happier.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-02 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I had to stop buying them because of financial reasons. I was forced into it. And honestly? I'm glad that it happened. I have a tendency to hyperfocus on things I want and feel as though I simply cannot live without it, but I have been forced to see that oh yes, I can in fact live without it and it's been freeing in a lot of ways. Plus, I don't feel like I have to play to get my money's worth out of the battle pass.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-02 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Even in competitive games you can only maybe keep up with the whales so why waste the money? My main game is single player but the devs always have a ton of ways of making players think they’re competing against each other. I’m constantly reminding my guild that it doesn’t matter. When there are tens of thousands of players split into groups of 1000 to fight each other for the top spot, only the ones with bottomless bank accounts will even make it into the top 20. Spend money on what you want. If that includes a battlepass now and then to get an extra boost towards some gear or something, then do it. But don’t mindlessly spend trying to keep up with the showcase players. Once I personally realized that and started practicing it, I had so much more fun. And it’s helpful for my guild members who cannot spend in the game to be reminded that they aren’t missing out on much of anything at all, the big gains are out of reach for 99% of players.

Pokemon Go

(Anonymous) 2025-12-02 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The only one I buy now is Pokemon Go, because it encourages me to play in all the events, which requires leaving the house multiples times a week. Sometimes, it's only that and groceries that I leave the house for in an entire month.

The person I have been fandom friends with since Markiplier in Space came out has not been taking the news of Markiplier getting married well. Since the images dropped of the wedding, she's been doubling down on posting and reblogging thirst posts of him.

I'm still sticking around because I like her fics on Markiplier's fictional characters, but I hope it doesn't spiral into something worse.

I never got into Breaking Bad.

I watched the first two seasons, and found it too bleak, and the characters too unlikable for me to want to follow them.

At least give me interesting lore like Game of Thrones or something.

Health of partner concern

(Anonymous) 2025-12-02 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I am concerned about how to move forward with my relationship. We are currently long-distance, and they want to move in together. There are several reasons why I am hesitant, but the biggest is simply their health. They are quite overweight, around 500 pounds, and very nearly as sedentary as it is possible to be, without being totally bed-bound. (They only get up to go to the restroom or to get food. No trips to stores or anything.) They don't work due to mental health problems and also not really being physically up to it either, and live with their mom. They have high blood pressure, and were prescribed two different meds for it, but, due to not wanting to go to the doctor or to the pharmacy, they aren't taking them.

They are in their 30s and struggle with high heart rate and dizziness from cleaning. And not in-depth cleaning, but mom asked them to clean some of the trash in the bedroom, and it was difficult. I am genuinely concerned about their health, I mean, even short-term that is really concerning to me. They want me to move to them, so that they can escape their mom's house. I am not feeling inclined to blow up my life for this, when I am HONESTLY concerned they won't live for much longer. Like, it's scary. I'm terrified that I may get a call from their mom any day that they've passed away.

And trust me, I'm not in the best shape myself. I am overweight and have high blood pressure too but I do take the medications I was prescribed. I love this person very much, and I want to stay together with them, but I don't know how to handle this. They say they have severe hip pain that prevents them from exercising. They clam up/get angry/make excuses any time I bring up their health, which I almost never do because it is understandably such a sensitive topic. This is eating me alive right now.
