I don't know why people were so upset by aliens in Indiana Jones The Crystal Skull. Is that really weirder than ancient holy weapons and such?

Well, for me the whole aliens thing was a bit underwhelming and felt like a mismatch for the series. But I probably would've minded a lot less had the rest of the movie been better. As it was, I sat through it and went, geez, did they just do all that and pull the Ancient Aliens thing?

I was more upset by Shia Laboof

Actual cannibal Shia Labeouf?

That song still cracks me up.

Fun fact, the song is one of my favorites in Beat Saber!

It isn't that it was weird. It was that it was not well done. The storyline was weak, the acting was off (there are a bunch of actors in it that I know can act well, but the performance felt like they were all over the place, too broad in some parts, too intense in others, and stilted in some places), and some of the effects were terrible. It honestly felt like they'd just had a bunch a 50s adventure stories scenes in mind and then tried to fit a storyline into and around them instead of having a good storyline and choosing scenes that would best serve it and the characters. The aliens thing was kind of eye-rolling and sort of a puzzling choice given the previous movies.

^ Yeah, pretty much this. Maybe if they'd stuck with something more classically archaeological or continued with the Biblical theme (Spear of Destiny, anyone?) instead of aliens.

I actually found the aliens thing one of the least "offensive" parts of it tbh. It was set in the 50s when alien stuff was all the rage, just like the original films were set in a time period where perhaps the focus was more on mysticism.

To me, when people complained about the aliens in this film they were complaining about the wrong thing. It's basically everything else surrounding that plot that's the problem!

I mean - maybe they should've just left it alone. For most of my life there were two very good films and one reasonably ok (with a bit of: yikes) film. The fifth film was a return to the more obvious magical archaeological artefact focus and it still didn't recapture that earlier magic quite enough. I was actually bored during one of the chases because it felt very "oh we need a chase here" and then went on too long.

+1, the alien bit was interesting, and I loved having Marion back. Everything else, noooooo.
