It isn't that it was weird. It was that it was not well done. The storyline was weak, the acting was off (there are a bunch of actors in it that I know can act well, but the performance felt like they were all over the place, too broad in some parts, too intense in others, and stilted in some places), and some of the effects were terrible. It honestly felt like they'd just had a bunch a 50s adventure stories scenes in mind and then tried to fit a storyline into and around them instead of having a good storyline and choosing scenes that would best serve it and the characters. The aliens thing was kind of eye-rolling and sort of a puzzling choice given the previous movies.

^ Yeah, pretty much this. Maybe if they'd stuck with something more classically archaeological or continued with the Biblical theme (Spear of Destiny, anyone?) instead of aliens.
