I think about this too sometimes

(Anonymous) 2025-12-08 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a few years ago we had an anon that was in their 20s saying that "retro" sites like DW were cool among a certain set of the youths, but idk if they stuck around or if there were ever confirmed more.

I actually assume 30s is the younger crowd here these days!

I agree, I bet the average age is firmly mid-30s.

DA
I think the average is likely a lot higher. We do have a few anons in their 30s who’ve been around since their high school days, but we also several users who are over 50 and a few of us pushing real hard against 50. There’s one or two in their 60s.

There's some interest in LJ clones among zoomers because of Neocities and social media fatigue. I see people in their mid-20s on [community profile] addme sometimes.

I wish we had more new people, of any age really, coming in here. But I don't know how/where you'd "advertise" and how you'd avoid attracting too many trolls. I dunno.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-08 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've thought about posting secrets to fandom communities but then I just imagine the rush of trolls and it keeps me from even trying.

I assume the median age is 35-45ish with some slightly younger or older.

Definitely sounds about right but I think there are some 20somethings scattered around. The passage of time isn't getting easier...

(Anonymous) 2025-12-09 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 30, I've usually been among the younger users when there have been threads asking people's ages. I've been coming here on and off since I was 14 or 15!

I got an email from Livejournal last week celebrating my account being 22 years old, if anyone wants an awful datapoint.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-09 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
My original, first one is 21 years old 🥲 My "new" one is like 17 years old, every year when those emails come in, I get a little bit more depressed.....

(Anonymous) 2025-12-09 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
My LJ account would be *25* years old if I still had it. I joined livejournal when you had to have an invite to join. I was 16, I think.

I assumed a lot of GenX and Millennials, with some GenZ and some Baby Boomers. And maybe a few Silent and a random Alpha.

I'm 73. Been in and out of FS since I found it back in the LJ days.

No way to know unless we tell on ourselves, but I suspect there are a number of us late 60's to early 70's around.

I'd be surprised if we had under-25s. That cohort seems to prefer video platforms over ones that require reading and writing. I mention reddit to 18yos and get the gen z stare.

As someone who has been on Reddit for some years now, i’d say it depends. If you just browse the popular subreddits, then yes, the majority seems to skew older. But if you browse the subreddits for media that is popular with youngsters, say, Project Sekai or BFDI, you’re gonna see folks ranging from 11 to 21. Art subreddits and OC (Original Character) subreddits also seem to be popular within that age range.
I do agree that social media centered around videos seems to be more popular than the ones centered around reading/writing nowadays.

I'm 38 and I've been here for 15 years at this point. I wonder how many people (if any) who come here regularly are under 30, or if the userbase is entirely millennials+ who were sufficiently nerdy when LJ was in its heyday

I think the average age of FS regulars is younger Gen X/elder millennial. I'm almost 40 and I think most members are about my age, perhaps just a little older.

Some of my interests skew a bit young (Zoomer bro and Gen Z sister & nieces have influenced my interests) and I find the tastes of FS skew just a tad older than what I do. Similar to comparing my interests to that of my handful of close friends. We're all close in age, and friends with no kids or kids in the Gen Alpha range will likely not be into what I'm into. With my friends who have Gen Z offspring, we tend to have more common interests.
