You are not alone, OP. I've always felt that the horse world was like a big fandom, and the equestrian sports part of it doubly so. Just think of how much more fun it'd be with an actual fandom, with shipping/RPF wanks and drama instead of just the usual trainer/breeding/shoeing/feeding/supplement/grooming/slaughter/safety/newbie/breed/pasture/tack/leather/clothing wanks.

Hahaha, this.

[identity profile] wordfuzion.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Is that Keltic Salinero on the right?
ext_22037: (hello)

[identity profile] flax.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's Courtney King-Dye and Mythilus (so basically the antithesis of Anky and Salinero, lol).

[identity profile] megu.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
You're such a nerd. :D
ext_22037: (fat pony)

[identity profile] flax.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's just my sport! STOP JUDGING ME, YOU'RE JUST JEALOUS AND WISH YOU HAD A PONY

... as do I. BUT THAT IS NOT THE POINT

[identity profile] megu.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
XD *JUDGE*

Actually I wish I was as good at something/passionate about it as you are with horsies. Wah.
ext_22037: (COOL GUYS DON'T LOOK AT EXPLOSIONS)

[identity profile] flax.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the "good at" it part isn't true, but I am passionate about it, lol.

[identity profile] ihrayne.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
YOU ARE EVERYWHERE TOO!! :D

Any antithesis of Anky is a good antithesis!
ext_22037: (philosophy)

[identity profile] flax.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yo, we horse nerds gotta stick together!

IKR? Boooooooooooooo Anky. (Even though I am sure she is a very nice lady and she works very very hard for what she has. I just don't like how she trains.)

[identity profile] lumati.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
......

My brain took that and ran with it a while.

I regret to inform you that the conclusion drawn was "No please don't! Then what would we do? Firs they'd start shipping riders which isn't so bad, and then they'd start shipping the horses which also isn't so bad. BUT WHAT ABOUT WHEN THEY START SHIPPING HORSES AND RIDERS OH GOD MY BRAIN!"

I regretfully have concluded that I'll keep my nose in safer waters.

Fandom, you have twisted my brain to a degree that is scary.
ext_22037: (jojo)

[identity profile] flax.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
OH GOD PLEASE NO

The CotH forums and the UDBB have enough drama already, thanks. I don't know what kind of "pretty" you feel horse sports are lacking, but yikes. :(

Oh, also, anon, I can't find the video anymore (because the wank-tastic video of Patrik Kittel's atrocious blue-tongue warmup is all that comes up with any combo of his name and "video" in a search), but if that one of Isabell Werth and Patrik Kittel at the GP Kur prizegiving at CDI Bremen this year didn't get people shipping, I don't think anything can. ;)

Hey hey hey. I think those women are incredibly pretty. :O

[identity profile] maplelump.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
No idea how happy this made me. I wish there was more of a fandom for my sport. But my life is sucked up enough from other fandoms, that I wouldn't even go to my classes if there was a fandom for this.

AND... *SQUEEE!!* for the awesome CKD pics.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
I love riding, but... why do sports have to have fandoms?

Maybe it's just me not being into sports. Even my love for equestrianism only goes so far. I just can't care about them.

[identity profile] eastcoastfilly.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm more a racing fan than an equestrian fan (I'm a horse lover overall, I try every time the Olympics come along, but when I realize that most of them aren't gonna go that fast, I kind of get bored... ^^;;; )....We have enough wank in racing by itself, I don't want to bore you with it all. Add fandom to the mix and I'm afraid people will finally start killing each other. >>;;;

[identity profile] flax.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
(lol, apparently I'm trolling this thread because I'm so excited about horses on f!s)

... I have to say, if you find cross country (and even show jumping) boring, you must find the rest of life unbearably dull! I mean, not only are they going fast, there are HUGE SOLID THINGS in their way! Come on:

;)

[identity profile] pewter.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU!

Cross Country is really so much fun and so interesting to watch.
ext_22037: (hello)

[identity profile] flax.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
I don't even event, it's just hardcore awesome. :D

[identity profile] eastcoastfilly.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, the outsider-looking-in deal. There's probably masses of story I'm missing. And if I made friends with an avid equestrian fan and took them to the track with little or no knowledge before the fact, they'd probably wonder why I'm getting so riled up about this trainer or that horse when their odds are saying nobody else is. ^^;;;

Cross country is actually pretty fun to watch. It's like the horses have to be so restrained and formal most of the time, but they actually get to run and be natural for cross country. The jumping events fun sometimes. They mentioned a couple of people with retired racehorses (now there's an idea I can get behind! Adopt and retrain a racer!) and one guy last year tried to pull some kind of rodeo cowboy routine to get a jump and his horse ended up crashing through it (he technically blew it, but it was fun to watch! Gutsy, too!).

But, I try to watch dressage every time and it's like the same thing over and over. I wait for someone to come out to music I actually recognize and wind up with one routine after another to opera and classical music. The last Olypmics, they made a big fuss out of one of the riders who paid a ridiculous sum of money to have a rather boring piece specifically composed and written for his routine...I couldn't watch anymore dressage after that because it just turned me off. It probably isn't any different from atheletes that pay ridiculous amounts of money for special swimsuits, shoes, or sports equipment, but it sounded so stupid. I want to reach through the TV screen and shake them. Lighten up! Blast some rock music! Have fun!

I probably should have rephrased it. Cross country and jumping are fun, but the dressage just leaves me shaking my head sometimes (okay, let's see if my foot-in-mouth disease acts up and gets dressage fans on me...^^;;; )

[identity profile] flax.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, out of curiosity, do you work with horses at all or just follow racing? OTTBs are common in most horse sports, though not necessarily at the top levels except maybe in eventing. But hey, Hilda Gurney, who's a big name in dressage in the U.S. retrained Keen (http://www.usdf.org/halloffame/inductees/profiles/keen.asp) who was a retrained racehorse, even!

... But you are too late, I am a die-hard dressage rider! And I find horseracing super boring to watch, actually, but I do understand how tiresome dressage can be for the uninitiated. ;) Unfortunately, the music for freestyles is a little like in figure skating — I think riders and audiences alike would enjoy more fun music, but the judges and standards are very conservative (don't get me started on the judging wank, lol, the last Olympics were so mishandled), so they penalize riders for getting too out there, and also, I believe lyrics have to be relatively limited by the rules. :( But even so, people do fun things occasionally — Steffen Peters uses Safety Dance in his current one for his main horse Ravel, and Debbie McDonald, who just retired, had one with her horse Brentina that used Aretha Franklin's Respect. :D But you're right, dressage does have a long way to go in shedding its boring/stuffy image with outsiders, and I don't think the coats and top hats help.

Equestrian sports at the Olympics tend to be pretty ... um, lame, though. It's the World Equestrian Games you want to check out — more events and more important in some ways! Here, this video made the rounds back in the day even on non-horse sites and had people frothing about it, if you haven't seen it and it doesn't get you at least bopping along with it IDK what to tell you. :(

Would Hugh Laurie/Robert Sean Leonard fic with appearances by Gabriella Salick count?
