Few things have made me happier of late.

And Brad Wright's hissy fit in comments is just what I'd expect of him.

*gasp*

You didn't want a television show?!

The controversy!!!!!!

[identity profile] shaggydogstail.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed it, and it's not even my fandom. I loves me a good smackdown.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I can't wait until people shut up about the SGU hate. Who the fuck cares, it's a fucking television program.

[identity profile] boombangbing.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
*sighs* I remember the days when the SG writers were cute and geeky and awesome. /old fan.

Also, re: his comment about V; seriously? It's a remake, and whatever your opinion is of that, the original was a cult hit. It's not just going to become 'a letter in the alphabet again'. Cult SF, learn you some, Mr Wright.
meredith44: Can't talk, I'm reading (English by thefunkyicon)

[personal profile] meredith44 2009-11-17 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I adored her rant. I might not agree with every critic's opinion, but they are certainly entitled to them.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely not alone.

I stopped following the creators of Stargate once they came off as so damn righteous and annoying. It's sad to see they still are, but at least someone isn't putting up with their bullshit.

MOST DISAPPOINTING STARGATE SPIN OFF EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
I actually thought the first few episodes were about as weak and derivative as the first few episodes of Atlantis. *is shot*

But now that we're past the birthing pangs, I'm honestly enjoying it more than I ever enjoyed Atlantis. It doesn't have those creepy colonial undertones, and it's much more in line with our newer understanding of the possibilities of life on other planets, which makes the astronomy nerd in me squee. When that chick mentioned the gas giant as a "comet catcher", and Rush mentioned the "Goldilocks zone", I seriously had a fangasm.

In other words, it's much "harder" science fiction than the previous two have been, and that appeals to me. But I can see why some people are not digging it. I just wish that they'd stop comparing it to Battlestar Galactica, because I stopped seeing any resemblance after episode five.

//two cents

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

It's very different than the other two shows. It's not a good thing or a bad thing, it's just a different style of science fiction, and it's a refreshing change.

[identity profile] julia-here.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
Speaking as a hard SF fan, and someone who only watched SGA so I could understand the fanfic? SGU sucks. It sucks on the most basic story-telling and world building levels, and it's not getting any better. I only hope that his association with it doesn't damage John Scalzi's reputation.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
Simply stating your opinion as fact does not make me any more inclined to agree with you. I've enjoyed episode five and onward. There are some pretty big plot holes in terms of the overall mytharc, but they're no more egregious, than, say, thousands of different alien humans speaking English for no adequately explained reason whatsoever even after it's been established in the first episode that the very first group of humans they encounter had to be taught how to speak English. That became such a huge issue for me that it sometimes threw me out of episodes.

To me, the episodic writing from episode five and onward has been solid. If you want me to go into more detail, I'd be glad to. And, even if it's not as solid as I've perceived it to be on first viewing, it does not follow that it sucks. Being flawed does not mean being void of entertainment value, as is evidenced by the fact that enough people seem to like SGU that other people on F!S feel the need to find their own little corner to hate on it.

So, are the people who like it misguided? Are they stupid? Are they inferior to you? If I was picking on antagonism that wasn't there, I apologize, but I've been dealing with this kind of shit from the FMA fandom for years, and I am sick and tired of it.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
People like you fucking piss me off.

If you don't like the show fine, good for you. Let me watch Stargate Universe in peace, and you can continue to sit the "SGU sucks" corner. At this point to me, any complaint from the SGA crowd is akin to me to a three year old throwing a tantrum because mommy won't buy them a lollipop.

[identity profile] julia-here.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of the whining I've seen has been the pitiably few SGU fans on the SyFy forums, Gateworld, Scalzi's blog, and in comments on all the reviews. "It's just a television show, don't take it so serious" usually with several spelling errors.
