It always bugs me that people can't take things "as is" and as separate entities. :< I liked the movie here and there honestly. It's pretty for sure |D but the musical is great too.

Nothing wrong with that OP <3 and ffff I like them together - SAD PHANTOM IS SAD but still. It's the life of a tragedy.

I ship Raoul/Christine as well - why would she want to pick the creeper with the hideously scarred face who threatened to kill her fiance unless she decided to live in an undergound dungeon with him?

Honestly, I'm a musical fan from way back, and his portrayal saved Raoul for me. I always thought he was a prissy little bitch who Christine was better off without until the movie.

The movie wasn't that bad of an adaptation; it was a damn sight better than, say, the Rent movie. If only someone had thought to tell Gerard Butler that he can't fucking sing. Ahh, well.

I hated the movie in general, but loved him as Raoul.

I don't think it is insane to like the movie though. People like what they like.

As someone who's only vaguely a musical fan, I feel like I can say this--I like that movie. Yeah, it's not the best, but it's entertaining--even if I *did* like the stage show more when I finally got a chance to see it.

...It's just a shame they didn't have someone better cast as the Phantom.

[identity profile] nezbit.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I liked that movie; it's what got me to see Phantom on Broadway. ...That happened to be better but NONETHELESS I enjoyed the movie.

I do hate his Raoul, though.

[identity profile] gentileschi.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not terribly fond of the movie but I am thankful to it because it made me appreciate Raoul as a character where I always disliked him before.

I happened to really enjoy that movie and Christine/Raoul makes the most sense to me.

I've seen the musical and I thought it was nice but I loved the look of the movie too so let the rest of them be and enjoy what you enjoy.

Also as someone said below, when there are different versions of the same canon, it tends to be best to think of them as separate things. Since a good film works differently than a good stage play or a good book.

I love Raoul, I love Raoul/Christine, and Patrick Wilson is my ideal Raoul, too.

My dad and I are fans of POTO in just about all of its incarnations, and watching the film together is one of the ways we bond (it's beautiful in French and Spanish, btw).

TBH I hate movie!Raoul. He's rather foppish and annoying. I quite liked him on Broadway and in the book, however.

I also quite enjoyed the movie. It's never going to measure up to the show in person, so there's really no point in trying to compare them.

I ship Raoul and Christine too, but not any of the live action ones. Those Raouls are nothing like the totally awesome sort of freaked out, but brave 'kid' in the original novel. The films make him too much of sweeping, self-righteous monster chaser for my taste. I adore Patrick though. Not so much in this film, but he's damn amazing.

Yay Phantom related secret!

I had a huge crush on him in this movie. I didn't recognize him as Nite Owl at ALL.

[identity profile] spazzed.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Raoul was phenomenal in that film! Probably the only one that actually had a legitimate voice. I loved him.

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah the movie made me like Raoul too. The power of Patrick Wilson I guess. Oh and I enjoyed the hell out of the movie*. Haters to the left.

*Then again my favorite movie version of PotO is the Claude Raines version so what the hell do I know?

[identity profile] resounding-echo.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I adore Patrick Wilson (he's perfection in Angels in America), and I had high hopes for his Raoul, but I feel as though he was bored with, or "phoned in," his role in the movie.

Or maybe it was the direction he was given? IDK, but I felt JS made the Phantom and Raoul more similar than not, such that I couldn't figure out why this Christine was attracted to that Phantom when she had that Raoul (who was manly and sexy and a better singer).

Lots of folks ship Christine/Raoul. I actually like both Christine/Raoul and Christine/Phantom, so I'll chat with you. :)

[identity profile] lionessvalenti.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
From the theatre fan community, it's okay to like Patrick Wilson in the movie because he's a legitimate theatre person.

For me, I like the move too, for what it is, but I'm not a huge Phantom fan. I like Patrick Wilson as an actor. I saw the show live a few years back (guess who I saw as Raoul, lol) and I appreciate the movie for boosting Gerard Butler's career because I've been a fan of his for years.

[identity profile] slythwolf.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a pretty big fan of musicals and of Phantom specifically and I really like the movie. Having seen the stage musical and read the book, I have to say I don't think there's a lot wrong with the movie that wasn't wrong with the musical in the first place. But it doesn't really matter, I mean, I am not the kind of person to give a shit what someone else thinks of the entertainment I enjoy. Haters to the left.

I have to say, though, I kind of want Christine to dump Raoul and Erik. They both want to control her and don't see her as a complete person. Erik wants to marry her and keep her captive for the rest of her life; Raoul becomes obsessed with getting rid of Erik and starts telling her she has to do stuff that makes her deeply uncomfortable because he personally thinks it's the only way to take Erik down. None of that is cool.

[identity profile] box-life.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Patrick Wilson is quite pretty, and more than a decent singer, and generally the shiznit, so you have nothing to be ashamed of there.

I have to admit, when I listen to Phantom, I listen to the movie soundtrack most often. YES, the movie has issues and it was nowhere near the quality of the musical, but it wasn't bad. It brings the show to lots people who can't afford a trip to New York. And yes, I know, Gerard Butler is far from a great singer, and nowhere near the best in the role, but I feel like he acts the part better than Micheal Crawford. And I'd rather listen to mediocre singing and good acting than excellent singing and mediocre acting. BUT that's just me. Phantom is a cheese festival either way, and that's why I love it. I have no complaints about anyone else's sound in the movie, except Rossum isn't loud enough to convince me she's singing to an opera house. And you have to admit the film is beautiful, if nothing else.

Also: Raoul/Christine all the way! There is no reason, good or bad, that she shouldn't go with the viscount!

(Anonymous) 2009-11-18 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a fan of musicals, I saw POTO on Broadway when I was 10 years old, and I love the movie version. It's a good movie adaptation. I didn't realize my love for the movie should be kept a secret. What a load of shit!
