[Scrubs]

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Most people in that age group end up going through this phase. I, myself, am not interested in kids, nor am I married, but I'd be lying if I said this was out of the blue and that a majority of people in my age group didn't do it. It's natural character progression, and it's been done without minimizing any of the characters in the roles you're suggesting. Unless you want them to continue acting like college students until the actors are in their 30s. Because that is totally natural.

[identity profile] azure15.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was pretty well done, the journey from them as fresh faced interns to becoming parents of their own. They moved on and grew up, and we followed their stories. I agree there was a time when the babies were OVERWHELMING, but on the whole, it could have been a lot worse.

[identity profile] dar-actually.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I too, don't hate babies, just what babies did to a good show.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can agree with this secret. Sometimes the babies don't happen and it's hard to watch everyone else doing the baby thing. That's why I prefer shows that don't tread that route.

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I half agree. I don't think JD having a baby helped that series at all, it was very "O_o". It made sense with Turk but...yea :/
Btw, I hate babies like it's my JOB, so don't feel too bad.

I think the baby thing got to be a bit much since pretty much, but then I think the romance thing in general took over. That said, I don't mind the fact that the babies are there and IMHO you're overreacting a touch. Scrubs last season is a very different show than it was starting out. The characters aren't growing up and maturing anymore, they are grown up and (generally) mature. Settling down, getting married, and producing kids is something the majority of Americans do, so I don't really have an issue with that being reflected here.

Honestly, I think I had more of a problem with all of the characters finding True Love more than the baby thing. Not even the Janitor was safe!

I was okay with Jack, and then with Carla being pregnant with Izzie. But the finale for the fifth season pissed me off. Were three pregnancies necessary at one time? No. Noooo. That was complete crap. I remember watching the screen fade and thinking, "Are you kidding me? Did they seriously just do that?" Jennifer Dylan and Sam are cute and all, but give me a break. THREE AT ONCE. That was ridiculous.

[identity profile] timid--timbuktu.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate babies. More on tv than in real life where I can avoid them so as their existence becomes irrelevant. However I probably hate J.D. more than any baby and if the question was "which do we remove from Scrubs, one or more of the babies, or J.D.?" I wouldn't even be a contest.

I have no issues with Carla and Turk's baby, but one of the reasons I stopped watching was the ridiculous JD and Kim storyline. It did nothing except make JD seem completely unsympathetic.

[identity profile] yukinoomoni.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I guess I'm pretty heartless, too, then, because I thought that the whole "babies" thing was overdone, as well.

Granted, Turk and Carla's baby storyline was okay. I dunno. I was just...so done after JD got someone pregnant.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-17 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe people wouldn't be so angry about your hatred of babies if you weren't so disrespectful about it. You're not much better than anyone else calling you an "evil baby hater" if you go around calling a woman a "walking uterus."
Just saying.

Lots of people hate babies.

[identity profile] deadsies.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't the writers say in one of the commentaries that they did the babies thing for funsies/lulz/awkward turtle? My memory's probably playing tricks on me but I think they did that purely for the 'wtf lol' factor. Personally I enjoyed it happening all at once but I did think it was a little ridiculous. I mean, they could have come up with something better, yeah, but I could care less about little brats and I still enjoyed it. Minus Kim. She always annoyed me. Plus at the same time as all of this stuff happening you've got other characters acting like assholes too and I just... those seasons were pretty meh for me.

/long comment is long.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
The baby thing wouldn't bother me so much if not for what it did to Elliot. At the beginning of the series, she says she hates kids, Then, a few seasons later, she's whiny about how everyone has kids but her. Yes I know people change, but 1. the fact that she used to dislike kids is never brought up, and 2. Not every woman who hates kids ends up liking them. I've never been terribly fond of kids (I can deal with the in small doses; nieces and nephews and things like that), and this hasn't changed with me being nearly forty.

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
My problems with Scrubs had very little to do with the baby storylines and a lot to do with the fact that two of the main characters went from being mildly neurotic but mostly sympathetic to all out insane and intensely unlikeable.

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Babies are great IRL, but I hate it when a show goes, "Not sure what to do next with these characters. I know, let's throw a baby at them!"

I'm liking the comedy around Cameron and Mitchel's daughter, Lily, but the show started out with her and the writers are actually doing things with that. Meanwhile, the baybeez plots that keep popping up in Brothers and Sisters and Desperate Housewives are one of the reasons I'm no longer watching.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-18 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the first kid (Jack) was handled pretty well, but yeah, I agree it went downhill from there.

I thought the storylines about the Turk/Carla and Dr Cox/Jordan kids made a fair bit of sense, but the random JD/Kim one always bothered me. And I'm one of those people that didn't want JD and Elliot together, so meh to the last ep.

[identity profile] holidaylights.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
It must be hard being a working "pofessional" with no interest in children. So persecuted!

Correct

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yes. Hating an entire segment of the human population is, indeed, evil.

Oh, but yeah, that response you're about to write? Yeah, no. Don't.

It's just as bad as HATING ALL OLD PEOPLE. man they stink and wet their pants and their kids don't take proper care of them and they ride their damn scooters and they're crotchety and there are all these commercials for blood pressure medicine and i'm expected to tolerate them, they're destroying my lief, tch

[identity profile] razetora.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
ENTIRE SHOW IS BABIES

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand not wanting to have kids (because I don't), and I can understand being frustrated by cliche storylines and being turned off of a show as result but... why hate babies? What have babies done to you? Sure, sometimes they can be mildly irritating when they throw a tantrum in the middle of a crowded train or a fucking movie theater, but there are still plenty of stupid adults you can hate on instead! Pick on someone your own size, like the dumb ass parents who took their newborn to an R-rated movie wtf.

Try How I Met Your Mother! It's not all about work, it's about friends. One of the couples is married and has been together for 13 years and they're not planning on kids any time soon - it's actually been addressed already, and they passed up a prime opportunity to use a real-life pregnancy, so no babies for at least a few more years, I'd say. Also, it's incredibly delightful and can seem soooo true to life at times.
