I cannot stand the Grinch. I watched it as a kid and used to be neutral on it, just felt meh about it. But some of the most obnoxious, unlikable people I have ever met LOVE it, so now I dislike it by association with them.

I also despise the way that lately, it's gotten extra commercialized. I feel like over the past few years it has gotten more and more popular, and now you see all kinds of Grinch-themed crap, which is extra stupid when you consider the fact that the message of the fucking story is that happiness and joy shouldn't come from buying shit.

I'm mildly curious if what you watched as a kid was the cartoon or the live-action movie.

OP - it was the cartoon one! I liked it well enough as a kid, but I didn't have fond memories of it like I did with, say, Garfield Christmas or the animated Rudolph one. I don't think I ever saw the live action one, I think it came across as creepy and I never watched it.

Fair nuf. I like the old cartoon, but then I'm a big fan of Boris Karloff & Chuck Jones.

(As for the live-action film, I'm impressed by Rick Baker's ability to make humans look like Seuss critters/people, but I've never wanted to see it.)

I felt I was a little too old to watch the Jim Carrey one (I was an older teenager and kind of in my "NO FAMILY MOVIES EVER" phase), so I've never actually seen it, and I find that's the one that people go crazypants bananas over. I have seen the original cartoon a bunch and found it generally inoffensive.

It's kind of like it's Universal's answer to Nightmare Before Christmas, like they decided all the alt people who like Christmas (but Not Like That) are all Grinch and Nightmare Before Christmas people.

Re: NBC
It's actually a favorite film of mine, but there was a period I couldn't stand it because the merchandising was oversaturated. I no longer actively tell people that I like it lol I just watch the movie when I babysit my nephew because he likes it a lot too XD

It is definitely the commercialization of a subculture that has cheapened the appeal of NBC and goth/emo culture

I am distinctly neutral on the Grinch. I saw the cartoon once ever, don't really remember it past the moral of it, and otherwise have seen the live action Grinch a handful of times over the years.

But yeah there is a lot of merch for it that it kind of took me buy surprise. I didn't realise it was that popular.

I still have a soft spot in my heart for the book and the animated film.

But I agree with you on the unpleasant over-commercialization and running into some people who are very OTT in their love of it.

I just rewatched Dominic Noble's video on the adaptations of the story, focusing on the later live-action film. There's nothing shocking there, but a few little interesting tidbits. https://youtu.be/6qIT0kpQOCA

Yeah. It is honestly kind of depressing to see it bastardized to become more shitty marketing.

I keep getting scraps while noping out of youtube ads and holy shit, how are we really here?? where the LA grinch/whos are shilling for Walmart and not showing any of the "christmas is not about material goods" message? I mean I know why, but the Seuss estate should have been a lot more strict about their rights when they sold it all off.

It's almost darkly funny, that the Grinch of all things is now being used as a marketing tool to sell Christmas items and adult Happy Meals. "Maybe Christmas doesn't come from a store" says the pillow made of cheap materials created by near-slave-labor and shipped across the world to be sold in a store.

I have some fondness for the original animated short purely for the Chuck Jones of it all, but I cannot stand the Ron Howard movie; it's just so unpleasant to look at (those horrible prosthetic snouts the Whos have??? dreadful).

Ugh, I know. I’m usually a fan of slightly grotesque things and that movie is also really unpleasant to me.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-14 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Same, that one creeped me out and I don't think I ever even watched it. Just the previews of it were horrifying to me.

I don't dislike or hate The Grinch but I do feel like it's in the middle of a Christmas oversaturation.

A Christmas Story was a funny Christmas movie I caught on tv as a kid, but by the early 2010s I hated the movie! Couldn't stand the 24 hours of A Christmas Story on TNT and TBS, couldn't stand the weird ass straight to DVD sequel, couldn't stand all the goddamn fucking merch and commercials of A Christmas Story that were everywhere for years on end.

That happened with Love Actually, Home Alone, Elf, and probably some other Christmas themed movies/episodes of beloved shows. Most times, after a while I can come back to the Christmas thing and enjoy it, but time needs to pass first.

I agree with you. It seems like every few years, a particular Christmas movie/franchise will become dominant and oversaturated. Then it eases back and a different one takes over. For awhile it was Elf, and now it's the Grinch. I honestly find the Grinch stuff to be distasteful because it just feels like the opposite of the point of the story, but I find all the overconsumption captialistic hyperdrive that happens at the end of the year to be really gross in general, so this just goes right along with all the other stuff.
