I go back and reread old LJ entries and comments from people I've lost touch with and wallow in nostalgia and regret sometimes, OP, so I get you.

I'm part of dying or nearly dead fandoms, and have had to say goodbye to a number of fellow fans who are (were) decades my senior. Most of the websites that used to host fandom discussions, fanzines and other activities are now gone but I love going through what I can get my hands on. It feels like all the fans are still with us.

Wayback machine is pretty much how I find long lost fanfic. (I don't share it, of course, because there may be good reasons the author removed it.)
