Personally, I don't really know how much I can actually judge her writing because I can't read the original text and have seen at least three different translations in very differing qualities. So I think judging it based on that would be unfair. I do like some of her plots but am not a fan of any of her main characters - I always like side characters much more than the protagonists.
I absolutely get what you say about the sex scenes but I do think people tend to focus too much on them. Are they a cringe 90s yaoi trope filled mess? Yes. Are there actually very few of them (and iirc all in extras that nobody HAS to read)? Also yes. Like, there are hundreds of chapters but the thing people get hung up about (positively and negatively) are around 3 chapters of extras (while one novel doesn't actually have any).

As for why it's so popular: it's because MDZS was one of the earliest FTLs that got a bigger than usual fan base (aided by the manhua getting translated as well). And people tend to really idealise the "firsts" of a certain fandom obsession, like glorifying a gateway drug lol. While I am really not on the hype train anymore myself because I found a lot of novels that I vastly prefer, I will always have a soft spot for MDZS in particular because it was the novel that got me into the CN webnovel genre in the first place.

I try to make allowances for translation issues, but some things are so clumsy that I'm doubtful there'd be a good way to phrase it that makes it seem good, if that makes any sense? And people focus on the sex scenes because they're hilarious and bad, the worst of the bad writing examples in MDZS. IMO, nearly all the romance in the novel feels really juvenile to me, like we're reading about two young teens even when the two leads are well into adulthood. But this is probably one of those things about the genre where love makes people act like they're awkward 13 year olds and lots of people think it's cute or something. I don't find infantilisation cute or romantic, and I might be in the minority there.

Just like the sex scenes, the romance in those novels (and unfortunately a lot of other CN BL novels) seem firmly rooted in 90s yaoi tropes.
