Agreed. As an aroace, I've noticed the "why can't they just be friends" is only ever aimed at gay characters; when they're the same gender suddenly friendship is more pure. A man and a woman who stand next to each other, however, should always always always get together because that makes them more important to each other than even friends! Which is it???

I get tired of it across all genders and species and life forms. I mean people will even be wanting the damn robots to fuck. Why can't we value friendships?

It's only ever aimed at gay characters by a vocal minority. I'm not big on romance as a plot for any genre, so I prefer ride or die friendships regardless of who's involved and what their genders are.

DA
I actually prefer ride or die friendship in the canon amd then shipping option for fanon.

They may be a minority, but they're the only ones who talk about it. It's very telling where they choose to.

I'm not a shipper, so I don't really talk in fandom spaces concerned with shipping. But I talk about how much I prefer friendship over romance in most settings all the time. This isn't the first comment made here about the double standard between m/m and m/f ships vs. friendships and I almost always respond about how I like and prefer friendships over romances for both m/m and m/f pairings. But largely, comments like mine are brushed over because the whole
"why can't they just be friends" is only ever aimed at gay characters" belief is really, really strong. I've had conversations like this:

[in reference to two male characters]
Me: I prefer friendship to romance.
Other user: Homophobe! You're only saying that because you don't like gay romance! You wouldn't say that about a man and a woman.
Me: Yes, I would, and I have. I also prefer friendship to romance if the two people in question are man and woman.
Other user: [silence because my response doesn't fit their narrative/argument]
