I wish Twilight hadn't so publically wrecked the vampire genre. I'd absolutely recommend the Empire of the Vampire series by Jay Kristoff to anyone, if it wasn't for the fear of being judged for liking "trashy vampire romantasy", which it definitely is not!

Hmmm. Well, I'll try it OP, but the cover with the half-naked vampire hottie isn't helping those trashy romantasy vibes...

(Anonymous) 2025-12-23 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
yeah that cover art is NOT beating the trashy romantasy allegations

Cover art can be so misleading and awful, though. Hell, there's entire websites dedicated to examples of such.

As for trashy vampire romantasy? Hey, you do you. That said, I read the first Twilight book and found it to be *boring* trashy vampire romantasy-- and boring is one the worst kinds of bad.

Is there a romance? Sure, but it's one of many relationships and isn't the story being told, if that makes sense? There's a lot of religious imagery and a semi-exploration of the difference between belief and religion when belief genuinely, literally saves your life but the religion has all the crap that comes with organised religion. So, if that's not your bag or if it's a trigger, steer well clear.

The one reason I love the series is that I find it engagingly written, with some real dark horse side characters, so it's massively YMMV as what I like may nor resonate with you.

my overwhelming impression from the first few pages of EotV was of grimdark edgelork hyperviolent persecution-and-power fantasy bullshit, at the exact same level of self-indulgent shallowness as romantasy but for dudes

is it not that, or

I want to know the answer to this question, too.

that is kind of Kristoff's whole thing, imo. So, you know, eotv is going to be fun for some and not for others. It's just knowing the genre of 'fun or not fun' that helps.

Well, there's fewer plot holes that standard romantasy for starters! Plus more gay people who aren't the "best friend" sidekick, so that's a plus!

Literally any book in an apocalyptic setting with a male protagonist who has a level of cynicism could be considered somewhat "grimdwrk edgelord" so yeah, sure, agreed. Persecution-power fantasy maybe not so much? He ends up more the battered knight of the actual important person, if we're talking tropes, than the Chosen One Hero Guy.

Definitely hyper violent, tick in the box for why I like it!!

Twilight is just end stage cancer caused by Anne Rice's "moody misunderstood vampire" trash.

We need to get back vampires being evil monsters again.

Thanks, secret maker :)
