What bullshit? Olivia literally said:

Olivia Rodrigo opened up about the writing process for one of her most beloved tracks, “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back,” which is an interpolation of Taylor Swift‘s “New Year’s Day.”

Rodrigo got candid about getting the green light from Swift and Jack Antonoff, who are both credited as writers on “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back” despite not technically collaborating on the song. “Jack Antonoff & Taylor Swift, who wrote ‘New Year’s Day’ a.k.a. my favorite love song of all time, were kind enough to approve my reimagining,” she revealed in her SOUR one year anniversary zine.

Rodrigo has previously opened up about how “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back” came to be; the idea came to her while in the car during a road trip. “When I got home, I decided to sing it over the chords of ‘New Year’s Day,’” she said on the Zach Sang Show. “I think they’re really beautiful chords. I was lucky enough to get that approved, and it’s on the record now. So, yeah, it’s a cool thing.”
