Pictures

What sort of photos of people do you like to take? Or photos you like to see?

I was born in the 1980s into a family that liked taking pictures. Many special trips taken to Walgreens to get photos developed. Grew up when everything turned digital.

In my experience, most people enjoy taking/want to take posed pictures, but I love taking and seeing the messy pictures. People in mid-motion, faces unaware of the camera. I feel like I don't see as many of those imperfect/unposed photos anymore now that digital is the most popular form of photo taking.

The posed photos are nice, and needed.
But I love the sorts of photos where we've captured people and things in motion.

I took a photography course in middle school (early 90s) and I loved taking photos of pipes.

Definitely messy pictures. One of my favorite pictures I’ve ever taken is of my parents in mid-laughter. They look so joyous and you can almost hear them laughing when you look at the picture. Much better than the pictures where they’re just posing.

I like both! I like to have a few posed "nice" pictures (especially for family get togethers where you don't see everyone in one place that often) and then the rest of the time I like to take "natural" shots of people just doing their thing. It's fun to document the natural way of life.

I like both, but the candid ones usually have more emotion for me. Seeing people as they naturally behaved is more meaningful and brings back more memories than the posed photos, although of course the posed ones are nice to look at.

I like both but composition is what will make or break either. Too many candids have busy backgrounds and it’s all just very loud and the photographer is too far away from their subject. Oddly, I prefer candida taken outdoors away from built up areas but I prefer posed portraits indoors against a backdrop. The super popular treats that won’t die, “let’s go out into the field and get Lyme disease!” photo shoots looks so stupid to me. I do think a lot of that is down to the skill of the photographers; most are self taught and don’t always make the best choices for timing the light.

I agree with you. Posed pictures are nice, but they don't give you the same slice of life feel that candid photos do. You don't get that snapshot of a moment in time when people are just living their lives instead of grinning at the camera.
