What do you think about shadow bans and hidden censorship?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Case deleting comments without a trace, Reddit showing your comments to you only and hiding them from other people, Youtube algorithm pushing some videos at you and making you search for others. I also noticed that it became harder to get useful Google results. Do you ever miss the freedome of 2000s Web?

I think it's a good way to deal with trolls. Don't give a reaction, just erase their bullshit.

I have to admit I kinda enjoy it when people stride in expecting to make people mad, get deleted, and get mad themselves.

Same. It is an amusing little hissyfit.

DA
"I'm not the one getting upset and ruining the mood, you are! See? You're standing there, shaking your head and rolling your eyes. You are soOoOo upset because you know I'm right and I'm the only one brave enough to call the BS out." *defensive sputtering continues for minutes*

I have yet to see Case make a bad call. They usually only step in when the trolls are busy. If you don't like it you are welcome to leave.

I've never had my comments hidden on reddit or deleted here. And I stopped using google a few years ago because it is paid trash results at this point.

I agree, I've never seen Case remove comments that I thought should have stayed. And the matter-of-fact removal is also A+ modding imo.

Yes, Case does an amazing job. It’s a bitch, being a mod, and Case does it really well.

Why is Case deleting comments of shitstirring lumped under this, lol. F!S isn't a public resource like Google.

Shadowbans on namespace are a nuisance, though. On Tumblr/Twitter/Reddit it's usually done by bots flagging you instead of what you've actually done. I was shadowbanned on Tumblr twice for queueing too many posts, they told me in my email appeal that it made the bots flag me as a spammer.

There's duckduckgo and ecosia for Google alternatives.

Oh, does it bother you that a mod actually moderates their own comm?

I love how you pretend it's the same as AI slop, shitty algorithms, and everything Google has done to betray its early self. If their search engine bothers you, then switch to a different one. I'm sure even Google will show you a few results after their AI trash.

What I learned from the freeform of 2000s web was that algorithms weren't worth shit anyway, and that I was responsible for my own enjoyment. Sometimes shit gets deleted, and that's unfortunate, but it's always been that way and always will, because it's the internet. Learn to find what you want without relying on the system to provide it for you, as our forebears have always done.

Yep. People also didn't coddle you on the old internet.

I don't think Case deleting comments at their discretion on the anon community they mod is the same thing as those other examples at all.

Very "freedom of speech means I can say whatever I want without societal or communal repercussions because I equate the consequences of my actions to literal laws, not social contracts" energy

I’ve never seen Case overmoderate. I think it’s hilarious that you tried to call him out for deleting your comments and he just exposed you for same annoning pretending to be someone else.

I’ve never been shadow banned anywhere. I use Reddit daily but am not very active other than upvoting posts I like. It means I have low karma and know I cannot participate in some of the giant subs so I don’t even bother. It isn’t that hard to look up the requirements for each sub. Most even point you to karma farming subs.

In *general* I dislike the concept of shadow bans because I dislike opaque algorithms. I want to know what is being prioritized or hidden from me and I want some ammount of control over that. And that's why I'm still on tumblr because I can just follow more pet gif blogs if I want to!

In practice I appreciate mods (Thank you Case!) just nipping stupid troll shit in the bud.

Also Google is bad now because they specifically chose to lower the quality of search results so you would search more times and they could show more ads. I'm not joking this is a known thing.
