idk about you but for me it's the way everyone (not just online but I guess my irl spaces are still fandom-based so eh) talks shit about Avatar in between movies, and yet a new one comes out and they line up with their wallets open. otoh even opening in December with holiday movie audiences, it dropped from 300m opening to 80m the second week, which is a major shift in interest. I know there's tons of people not in fandom spaces who unironically like these movies, but there's a disconnect when you peep out from "no one I know has even seen an Avatar movie" land and find out oof, lots of people did?
