(Anonymous) 2026-01-02 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)When I got into slash fandom, it was in the early days of the Internet. I had to actively searching for it in exactly the right fandom-centric places. Slash fans had to make our own communities, archives and zines because slash, even mild G or PG-rated slash was not allowed in most spaces.
In non-slash spaces, F/F tended to be more tolerated than M/M because straight men liked it, while M/M was despised because women were doing something that made most people uncomfy. We kept our pseudonyms guarded, in-group secrets because of how disruptive it could be for our IRL lives if we got outed for writing m/m fic.
Whenever a parent got upset because their kid was looking at explicit material, it was almost always about m/m, to the point where site-owners would be threatened with legal action or reported to their IP for violation of TOS. When purges happened, it was often targeted at m/m. Does anyone else remember The Yaoi Shrine, Benjamin Wick, or the Tripod Massacre?
