I absolutely hate explicit sex scenes in movies or shows. They make me deeply uncomfortable. I have no issues with actual proper porn though, funnily enough.
I think part of it might be that I always have "damn this must have been so uncomfortable for the actors" at the back of my mind, even though I don't actually know if that's the case.

But yeah, main reason I could never watch any of the smut heavy shows (just some of the gifsets I've seen for Heated Rivalry or Bridgerton make me cringe).

Yeah and they're so unnecessary. Fade to black after teh build up would be fine.

...no? Some of us like to see actual sex and would not want a fade to black.

I'm mostly the same. I could never get into Thai BL shows because (almost) all the actors are bad at acting in general or just bad at hiding their discomfort at being that close to another guy. It takes a lot of work with the intimacy coordinator to pull it off. I've seen gifsets of HR though I haven't seen the show and it doesn't ping my cringe-o-meter. I plan to watch it at some point. I may not be as sensitive to it as you.

A lot of Korean BLs are just as bad, or worse. The amount of dead fish kisses in them just ruin otherwise good shows for me.

I see so many recommended and people say the acting is so good, the sex scenes are so hot, etc etc. and I watch a scene and wonder if these people have ever seen good acting before.

Are you listening in on my conversations?

Literally just had a convo with a friend where I basically said the same thing.

SAME. I think I've seen maybe a tiny handful that actually look good/hot/natural.

I hate smut in TV. Episode count is so limited these days that sex scenes are just wasteful atp. I'd rather see nuanced character development and a complete plot, or even something fun that ties the cast together.

I feel the same. I absolutely agree about the uncomfortable actors part, though I hope nowadays intimacy coordinators help with that. I watched one BL movie years ago and it was the least sexy thing I have ever seen.

But I'd also like to point out that a lot of sex scenes are not well written, or at least don't have what I want out of it. It's like fight scenes: there's spectacle (they fight), there's well-executed spectacle (ex: they fight using their environment in interesting ways), and then there's meaning (the fight establishes characters) and story (character moments happen during the fight).

(That's why porn works. Since I'm not watching porn for characters, if the porn gives me the right kind of spectacle, I'm happy.)

Even shows that pride themselves on their sex scenes often do not get past the spectacle, because the sex is not about the characters, it is about/for the audience (and the trailer, and the scandalous buzz). And in the same way I get bored with an action scene that explodes one car after the other and start thinking about how they shot this, I get bored with a sex scene that is nothing but too-hot people moving perfectly together and start thinking about how they shot this.

Ironically enough, I think Heated Rivalry is an example of very well-written sex scenes (and if it helps, the actors talk about how comfortable they were shooting them). You couldn't make a PG-13 version of the show by just fading to black as the characters start kissing in earnest without losing important context on how the relationship develops.

It's kinda funny that you picked a Heated Rivalry picture for your secret, because the sex is so important to the development of the characters and their relationship.

Also, both actors have talked about how fantastic the work was with the intimacy coordinator, of how comfortable and safe they felt. There are interviews with Chala Hunter (the intimacy coordinator) where she talked about everything that goes into choreographing scenes like that.

You can really tell how much care was put into those scenes. I'd recommend reading interviews with Chala Hunter, they are really fascinating!

OP, do you think porn actors are never uncomfortable? Because I have some very bad news about the porn industry.
