I 100% get Father Jud forgiving Martha at the end as it absolutely fits with the general theme of treating people with kindness that these movies have baked into them.

But man I am cut from a completely different cloth because I would never absolve someone like her of her wrongdoings, I would let her die entrenched in her guilt and responsibility over what she did because it’s what she deserves.

Well, yes. That is why he is a priest.

Yeah. That was the point they were trying to make re: his character arc - that he started off the movie questioning whether or not he was really suited to be a priest because some aspects of it were hard for him. Being able to forgive someone who'd done horrible things is a sign that yes, this is his calling.

While i 100% feel that the idea of being 'absolved' of your horrible deeds right when you die so you get to go to an eternal, wonderful reward seems like a lame-ass cop-out and complete and utter bullshite....

He's a priest who is committed, by his own words, to the love and joy and forgiveness in his religion, so it utterly tracks.

At the end she was repentant, and so she was spiritually absolved. It wasn't about comeuppance or punishment, but forgiveness and understanding - it was the whole point of Grace. It was a beautiful scene - I say this as an atheist.
