I don't like it when there isn't an explanation for people suddenly believing it. But if the villain is really good at lying and making it seem like the hero did it, I can buy that.

That's a really good point. It brings me back to drama my friend circle in a certain fandom got into years ago, which started because one friend kept hating on a character for believing her best friend was guilty of murder (every other character did too, but that one character got the most hate for it because she of all people "should know" her BFF wouldn't murder anyone). The thing was, the actual murderer had used some godmode-level secret power to frame the friend in a way that made it impossible to have any room for doubt. Nobody else knew those powers existed, so believing her friend was innocent just because he was her friend would still be stupid even while being right.
